no tree branches arround, but surrounded by trees...

Hey guys.

I'm relatively new to this game, half my played time is paused or main menu while I look for info, and half of the actually played time it's to test and try different things in the persuit of a configuration I would enjoy for actual gaming.
I'm all pushing and stomping on the ground, just to reduce weapon degradation, but recently learned the spear is actually very deadly and fast killing so I tried it out.
checked the recipe and it takes a plank and some tree branches. To my surprise I could not get those unless I went outside of town and foraged, but it struck me. They are tree branches, they should come from trees, there are trees everywhere, how come I can't get them from the trees directly? I should be able to right click a tree and collect a tree branch or stand by a tree to create a spear by only having a plank in the inventory and assumed to pick the branches from the nearby trees.

Am I missing something here? do I make sense? An alternative for me would be to change the recipe to only need a plank and a sharp tool

And yep, you need an axe...
A stone axe will do...that you can craft with a simple click
Try to craft a stone axe in 2 seconds...
Again, try to cut a tree with a stone axe...

Point is, it is a game, branches come from foraging or cutting trees...this is it

if the 5cm branch is long enough I could cut it with the weigth of my body, it's physics, AND a 5cm branch is not what seems to be needed to make a spear. Actually a 5cm branch would make a good staff that could be carved to make a nice spear. Makes more sense than a plank. The fact is that with a knife and your hands you could easily make a spear, no plank needed. no axe needed either. Check some survival shows, you can use a knife to damage the branch and then your body weight to snap it, but enough of trying to argument it.

My point is that branches could be taken from right clicking a tree. The problem I have with foraging is that I have to move away from town to be able to. Seems there is no scape of walking out of town to be able to build a spear. This game is very realistic and maybe some things could be changed in that sense.

Thanks anyway, the stone axe is a better option than going out and back every time I need to make a spear if no axe is arround

Some abstractions have to be done

They probably want the player to work a little
Handling branches (and stones...) for 'free' without any work everywhere on the map would be too OP
Or they would have to make the craft take an eon...

In town everyone would have their trees trimmed so that there are no low hanging or dead branches. Looking around in real life I don't see any branches I could forage without a cutting tool that would be suitable for making a spear with.

I get their philosophy on hard work but really, I walk around anywhere outside my house and can find branches and stones by the ton. Seeing sticks and stones lying around in PZ and not being able to take them is odd.

And no, trees do not just grow branches that you can take for yourself. Anything that is at least marginally suitable to make a spear out of has to be cut. So cut a tree or use Foraging - it doesn't even need any skills. Or use the Planks instead.

yes. there are branches around. you need to forage, a command you get when rick clicking on dirt or grass. depending on where you are you'll find wood in different forms, rocks, plants, small animals, etc
