Question Regarding Boredom/Unhappiness and Food (B41)
hey, so i've been trying to use up fresh foods first and avoid just burning through hoarded canned goods like i'm used to doing, and i'm having some difficulty understanding how boredom and unhappiness are applied to what you eat.

like, just now I sliced some fresh bread, cooked some fresh chicken, and made a chicken sandwich with mayo and mustard. sounds fantastic for the apocalypse, but it's giving me +30 boredom and +30 unhappiness!? that's worse debuffs than just eating the mayo or mustard staight out of the bottle!

basically, i just need to know if cooking is worth it or if this is a bug/feature that can be fixed with any particular mods. i'd kill for a mayo/mustard/chicken sandwich myself right now, so i know this picky-ass survivor would be eating it too.

I think it makes you unhappy because you are missing the modern world. Emulating depression. But when you make a wealthy fruit salad with all of the variety you had, it’s like you feel like you’re in a better world. If you Chuck lettuce and tomato in there then you are really living the life.

Did you butter the bread?
Salt the chicken?

Wait...just how much mayo and mustard did you put on that sandwich? Is it like, swimming in mayo/mustard? XD

No, didn't have any butter... or lettuce... or tomato! The lonesome memories of bygone times is certainly one way of looking at the unhappiness debuff, though.

Just one unit of each. Didn't put the whole bottle on there!
It’s the diff between eating to survive and eating to live.
It sounds as though you just throw a scrap of chicken between a slice of bread squirted a bit of Mayo on it and shovelled it in for the calories
General PZ cooking principles (not the exhaustive list):
You can use two of any ingredient in a meal, if allowed. The third will negate any happiness the first two added, and subsequent ones will increase boredom.
Frozen stuff will increase boredom/unhappiness until thawed.
Stuff that is specifically not marked 'fresh' might be going bad. If the individual ingredient has a negative (in red) happiness/or boredom number, it might be going bad. (Some foods will hint 'better if hot')
Slicing bread that is stale will increase boredom/unhappiness per serving.
Given all that brief list, since you mentioned some ingredients are fresh, take note of that mayo. It will go bad and WILL screw up your life. I myself say a little prayer every time a mayo jar goes bad, because it's like losing a friend.
You have to mix ingredients
Too much of the same and it becomes boring
The better cook you are, the more you can stack the same ingredient without malus

A sandwitch made of slice of bread / chicken / chicken / chicken / chicken / whatever....will sux
I'll add that vanilla cooking is pretty extensive and satisfying, plus mods can make it even better, since recipe construction is non-damaging to the game files.

LOL, the mayo's a friend alright. Thank you for this, that clears up a lot. I had two chicken and then one mayo/one mustard, all fresh but I guess being a ♥♥♥♥ cook and overusing the chicken is what did it.
