The biggest problem I'm having now, is I don't seem to be able to loot zombies, like I could in the Tutorial. I just finished my first playthrough, and despite killing 50 Zombies, none of them let me loot them or interact with the bodies (beyond picking up the corpses). One of them even had a shotgun, but I wasn't allowed to pick it up?
Make sure your Inventory is actually open.
Best advise: Slow Down. It seems like you're trying to rush things and you're missing the basics.
It is not about "correctness". it is about "appropriateness"
imo, the tutorial is not yet "appropriate".
Are there any other issues that you might be having that we might be able to help clarify? If so but you don't want to ask please remember that there's an extensive in-game help guild via F1 that has all the info you need complete with pictures. Hope this helps. Good luck.
I think a lot of players are experienced and have long forgotten how it was when starting out. Myself becoming one of them actually.
To be fair I think the tutorial tried to disable some options to guide the new player along, but it seems to be creating more confusion, as actions the new player just learnt suddenly became unavailable.
And I think, judging from a fair perspective, new players WILL get lost at the part the OP mentioned because the tutorial said to shoot the zombie BUT there are no more bullets.
e.g. I didn't know how to switch weapons, I didn't know how to even switch to hand-to-hand, and I didn't even know how to push the zombie down and stomp.
Even if the game "mentioned" the workarounds etc, it was easily missed.
And as a whole, I don't think it fully met its intended goal as a tutorial. Hence "inappropriate". Should be improved.
I learnt it because I watched a lot of YT vids from AA, CR and Nomis.
Someone here said that if the tutorial covered everything, it would be an hour long; I don't see this as a bad thing. The tutorial could be broken up into multiple parts, and you can quite them or continue them as needed. A good example of this is Factorio. In order to start a full single player experience, your required to complete 4? mini scenarios, some of which do take a half hour or longer. And after you start the main game, there's an in depth help log for more obscure things that come much later in the game, although it was mentioned that this game has one too, but I haven't tried it yet.
For the most part, having played many other survival games, things are mostly self explanatory. I haven't done anything complicated yet, like mechanics or carpentry, but that's mostly because I haven't stumbled across a hammer or saw, but I'm sure that stuff isn't too hard (and there's plenty of videos on that stuff, anyway).
I actually did pretty well on my first playthrough, and made it to the fourth day. However, I forgot to turn the stove off after eating, and didn't realize it was the cause of my overheating, which I died of stupidly -_-. Although, now that I know what to expect, I've installed a few mods, and I'm ready for Round 2.
I watched an early game tips video though, and had some of the events spoiled for me. I'm kind of worried about the helicopter event and the power going out. I tend to play these games slowly and methodically, so the chances of me finding a generator or working car to survive these events is unlikely. I guess my first goal, is to find a base of operations with a well, so that I have water when the power goes out.
Overall, the game has been fun. Definitely has my heart pumping, despite having played stuff like 7Days, and the like. It is kind of annoying how easily zombies detect you though. A lot of times they find me, just from removing broken glass. I don't really see why that picking up glass would cause that much noise. Also, the first house I ever tried getting into had a house alarm, which alerted like 100 zombies. That nearly gave me a heart attack.
I would say the tutorial is a bit short on the thing you need to do a lot, killing Z's, as in instead of trolling you with a shottie, maybe get you to curb a Z, then stab another, then maybe get you rolled when they give you a gun ?
Later when you got weapons you can take more, get one down then stand on them, and kill the other but I do get how the start can be annoying.
I suggest taking survivor and some melee heavy profession to learn how to melee, its annoying as heck.
I practise after getting hit, bandaging the hits and fighting more...either I am dead or I get to kick more butt,
I grab all the bling, and the clothes I want to nab, till I die.
I have 50+ chars done but I have learnt.
