Okay, now that the pleasantries are over with, check your sandbox settings. You don't have to setup custom games yet if you don't want to, but each vanilla difficulty level's recommended settings are also listed here, so you can get a relative idea of what the multipliers are for population at apocalypse vs. survivor, for example.
The gunshot is what's called a 'meta-event' and those are also configurable.
It sounds like you're on build 40 still. If you're up to the challenge, opt in to the build 41 beta. You'll still have the option for multiplayer, but only on steam remote play (instructions on separate thread). Combat is much more challenging, and your initial power level vs. that of the undead is merely noteworthy as opposed to heroic, at least until you level up a bit. Regardless of how tough you get as a survivor, don't attempt to engage more than two or three head on or you'll (literally) get dragged down and eaten. Feinting, and using your melee weapon's maximum range or maximum speed is paramount to surviving. There's scratch and bite protection somewhat in clothing, but over time and fighting it'll get ripped to shreds and you'll have to get new stuff. Predictably, guns are really loud (the .38 special is palatable for training on vanilla) so pick and choose where you want to use them. Check the newb threads for more info if you like.
Also you can change everything you want in the Sandbox setting, the game isn`t easy, so just check the settings out, you can even play with sprinters fe.
It's gotten a lot more difficult on Build 41 Apocalypse mode. And of course you can edit all those settings individually too we added to make it less/more difficult. Build 40 is nothing in comparison.
You can switch install both versions at the same time, so you don't have to switch back and forth if you want to play Build 41 on your own, and Build 40 with your friend for the time being.
