Short blunt is short blunt
Long blunt is long blunt, even if used one handed
If you have bonus to short blunt, use short blunt, really
There is also no reason to use 2 weapon types on the same character...you will just gimp both
Short blunt is quite amazing anyway
Very common / infinite, fast swing, light weight, one handed, dont destroy zombie clothes...and with bonus multiplier, you are fast into level 3-4+ (one shot...)
Probably my favorite weapon type with long blunt
Actually you will advance in both. And there are valid reasons to use ANY type of weapons. There can come times when you are low on weapons and have to just switch to other types. (Of course this usually happens on harsher settings, since you may encounter this at the beginning of apocalypse but after a while you wont have any issues with weapon availability. Also this only affects NON-craftable weapons.)
For the original poster:
"since there is no xp modifier for LONG blunt weapons"
I am not sure you mean for your character, or as a general statement, however if i recall well baseball player or brawler both actually give bonus to long blunt.
You are 100% better to be level 5 in one single weapon type than to be level 3 in all weapon types
Not only you do more damage the higher your skill in a weapon is...so you are better to train even more in this type....
...but you also defend better against zombies the higher your skill is
So, absolutly zero point to not use a single weapon type....unless of course, you still havent found your favorite type
As i have said the valid reason is not finding the same type of weapons. For instance at the beginning of an apocalypse mode, you can have the issue of finding 3 different types of weapons that break apart fast. Like kitchen knife, alu rod, the pool cue. At the start you will use what you find, and yes in apocalypse mode you will be able to get enough of what you want. But on other settings you may not.
In my playthrough i am currently doing (harsher 1 painful year settings with no fire/burn tactics), during my first two months i regularly had to think what to fight with, to the point that i wasted nearly 80% of my ammo in clearing my base, simply because i had beside all the guns and ammo only 3 melee weapons for about 200-250 zombies. And the melee weapons as per experience broke down usually after max 30 zombies. Luring them one by one was sadly not really an option. (And i did not wanted to lead them away, for certain reasons.) And i also had a sledge, but that is not really viable for a char of mine currently. So for know i am hoarding everything and fighting with what i have excess of. Yes i am not really focused on any weapon this way, however i can use most weapons, I do know how to fight decently to not hinder me. Yeah i would love to have those one shot kills, however even if i could do that with an axe the endurance cost would only let me kill like say 20. Whereas with a shortblunt i could kill around 40, with long blunt 30, and with short blade I can go on a killing spree. And i am still well over 2000 kills even though there are many days where i am not even fighting.
Mostly day 1 or 2 eventually...
But you can 'forage' or 'disassemble' all weapon types but long blade anyway...so not finding is a non issue
Also, i dont think the OP is doing any special challenge or whatever...
Under normal loot setting (Rare, which should be renamed loot pinata....), finding weapons is quite easy
If you have a bonus multiplier to a weapon type, you would have to be stupid to use another type (unless perhaps because of multihit...no idea here, i never use this setting)
Actually in this case there are quite a few weapon types not to use. And short and long blunt are among them. Since axes are plenty on the mentioned above setting and so are short blades it is the best option to focus on these and yeah spears. Solid one hit kill and not as rare as long blades; for axes and spears. For short blade the endurance requirement just makes it worthwhile and you can really notice how less and less stabbing is required for a zed to be disposed of. At the beginning it is like 9-13 (with 0/0), with skill 1.5 and str 3 it lowers to 5-7-9, later on with str 4 and sb 5 or 6 you will need 3-5 hits to kill a zed further i cannot tell as i never bothered to test it out. And also with sb you always have the one hit stab from behind option even on level 0. From later on you can also do it from the front quite easily. (From around level 2 or 3 short blade skill.)
And for the above mentioned reasons neither short blunt and long blunt are actually effective if you compare them to the above mentioned three. (Not to mention the only "infinite" as in never runs out short blunt is the metal pipe types and for long blunt the crowbar)
So, it makes sense to focus on short blunt and only short blunt
By level 3-4, you one shot with short blunt...easily...and with a multiplier, you are there very fast
One shoting is one shoting...over-killing does nothing...
Also short blunt comes with fast swing, low weight, many double as tools which you carry anyway, can have a second bag equiped witrhout any malus, dont destroy zombies (rare) clothes
Again, perhaps not the weapon type to choose if you havent any multiplier, but if you have short blunt multiplier....go short blunt
Carrying something in your other hand though gives you penalty to the hit, as per my experience.
