Fast key for pause?

I believe the F1-F5 keys are your best bet for time control. You can see their bindings in Settings.

Just remember that you can't perform any actions in pause mode.

Escape would be muscle memory for most players and it pauses the game in single player. So it's a quick solution.

I use pause mode to write in my journal notes when looting book stores. That might be the only action you can do while paused. Open my journal, pause game...type in what books I am collecting into my inventory and mark down any as NEED, HAVE, or FINISHED as I collect or read them. Bringing back a sack full of "oh, I already have that book at base." is sad for me.
