Perhaps this isn't true though. There are a number of maps available that have wells on them. Lake Ivy Township is my favorite of those, and one of the well sites is very defensible.
If you just have to have a well wherever you want, get Necroforge, head to a known spot that has a well, copy the tile information, then paste that information to a tile you want your well to occupy.
Well, a wall of cars works really well in this game. Walls can work against zombies or hordes.
Hasn't happened yet, and they don't get inside my carden (gardening area secured by cars) when I go away either.
I do want to try them in a crazy populated area, and see how it goes.
