I think Fishing needs a nerf.
Judging from the values I've seen on the wiki and stuff, and the short time I spent familiarizing myself with fishing, trapping and farming seem completely worthless in comparison.

I mean, putting 2 weeks into growing a crop and having to feed yourself in the meantime while it grows.

Compared to just walking to the river and spearing 8 more fish and stuffing your fat face *every* day. During the time It'd take to grow a single round of crops, I'll bet I could pack on 30-40 pounds just with spearfishing.

Like you can get a fish worth more than an entire plot of cabbages or 6 bird/rabbit traps, I think that deserves a rebalance.

Like in real life, you wont make a garden if you are able to craft a fishing rod with few digged worms.

Spear fishing could nerfed to the point to catch only low weight fish.

How severely nerfed are we talking?

Because if you can still catch 1-2 fish every day, you're not gonna starve or lose weight at all.

I haven't done much fishing at all yet so I'm unfamiliar, but I thought fishing spots get depleted and take a while before you can fish again? I thought that was supposed to be the balancing factor. Does it just replenish very quick or something?

I don't agree that fishing needs to be nerfed.

1 You spend your own time fishing, doing it actively - hunting and farming give you food without your participation.
2 Fishing requires worms, a lot of worms. If you use spear. fishing ll kill even more time.
3 You need to look at time to get max profit 4-6am 6-8pm
4 To repair a fishing rod, a twine or line is required. At an extremely rare loot level, it's too expensive. The spear is poorly suited for fishermen with low skill, and completely unsuitable for them in winter.
5 To improve the skill you need to read books, you don't need to improve farming skill at all.
6 The player using fishing is tied to the territory, not far from the water, this is already bad.

I think Farming needs a nerf. lol

1 The player does not waste his time next to the beds, unlike fishing, just once water after planting and water it sometimes again.
2 There is always water, but it is much more difficult to get worms.
3 Plants grow in winter and under roofs.
4 You do not need to read books, because you do not need to improve the skill of the farmer.

Fishing as is makes sense to me...the land is ravaged and abandoned, whatever is underwater thrives.
But where are the deers and wolves though??;-)

I think hunting is a focus in build 42, so I heard.

Finally reached winter on b41. Can't fish anything it seems. Level 5 fishing, rod and worms. Nothing.

You'd say, make reserves to last the winter. Yeah but fishes weight a lot compared to the other options, and fill the freezers quite faster. More freezers means more fuel consumed, more electronic parts needed to repair generator.

Fishing is a short term option ; it is not available all the time, not everywhere, and the resource depletes. Doesn't need a nerf.

EDIT
Should be. 12,5 from skills + 10 from worms - 10 from winter. Still big chance - about 15% I guess.

Trapping though afaik i know is void during winter.

Been browsing the game files, during winter fishing is harder but not impossible. Found same numbers as Elise. Did another test today. 10 worms -> 1 small pike, 1 small bait fish, 1 pair of socks. Seems legit, lucky even =p

Trapping is fine during winter, getting rabbits at the same rate as in summer, or so it seems. 4 traps -> 2 rabbits last 2 nights.

Nerf ? This is 100% how plants actually work and during winter, they still grow, in greenhouses just fine.

Bunnies, birds and squirrels are active during winter time and since lack of food abundance, it should be even easier to ensnare them.

As a side note, fishing can be also done without the need to be phisically present for that - net.
Also there could be added something called longline fishing, this still need a line but at least you don't have to waste your time standing by the water.

Additionally TIS could add the ability to make line from shoelaces, its not the best option but it does work.

I was wrong about trapping btw, I dont really like rabbit/squirrel/etc trapping, but birds are incredibly conveinient and restore a nice amount of hunger, I havent had a chance to look at its nutritional value yet but it seems like you could even get fat off of birds from anywhere on the map, which seems very, very good.
