You can barricade both sides at the same time as well. up to 4x per side requiring 4 planks and 16 nails.
You can also barricade with metal bars and metal working, which should require metal bars, a propane torch, and a welding mask in your inventory.
Seems higher levels let you add more planks to the barricade as well.
Once you find a sledgehammer you will be able to destroy windows and replace them with walls instead if you so choose (4 planks + 5 nails to build). A sledgehammer is arguably one of the "must have" items in the game.
No matter how hard you reinforce your house, all windows barricaded, metal grated, or metal plated...it does not matter. 10 zombies bring it up within max 3 hours in game.
Especially with metal working that means you just wasted precious gas, for nothing.
For woodwork, nails and planks of which you could have used to make support pillars and a second story, where you could be unreachable and safe.
Because of the above the barricading system is just useless. Most folks build walls not to protect themselves but to cut off parts of towns, or the map to not have zombies respawn.
Not really.
First of all because those first few levels of carpentry:
- you can get from tv
- you can start as a builder, and even faster from tv, as builder/carpenter, and if you find all the books by sheer luck you can hit level 6 from the tv shows ALONE. (Tested)
- better to dismantle the small garden fences, that zombies will eventually destroy if they hit it en masse.
- warehouse crates. You empty them, dismantle them. 20-30 xp. Hundreds of crates to dismantle. And there are quite many safe warehouses. Loot, planks and naisl, or burnable useless wood.(1 hour 24 minutes!)
Secondly:
- those few hours you think is given to you is actually an illusion. More zombies will be lured to you cuz of the sound, eventually getting surrounded and all your barricades being stomped. I know this cuz it has happened to me. I did the whole barricade stuff during my early runs. Sheet ropes torn down, it was pure sheer luck(or skill?) i was able to make it out and to the next house. Eventually i fled WP and found the three houses safe place. (Did not know map then. Also was lucky did not fracture or break a bone when i jumped out of the window in the house i got from my own, was also quite fast overrun.)
- those planks are better used to build floors over where your stairs used to be after you knocked them off.
- thirdly you actualy also seal off your own escape routes -> the protection they offer is just an illusion
Thirdly:
- if you board up your starting house you are doing things wrong. (at least in my experience and oppinion). The first two days are critical to save up as much of the food as you can. Putting everything you can into freezers. Because this way later you will have much more time to advance in your chosen crafts. Raid, loot whatever. (Because less time required to find your next meal, more time to improve your trapping, fishing, farming, and more time to read too!.)
So you are better off being mobile, eating as much vitamins and coffee as possible to stay awake. After you are done with supermarkets, food markets, diners, restaurants, spiffos, you have to go for the houses. Select the ones with least zombies around to hoard the food in the fridge's freezer there, so you can grab it later.
These are my tips, as a guy who is just a little bit shy of 850 hours.
Who discovered the true power of short blade fighters, and who never uses fire to kill zombies:) (Nor siren attraction!)
And who only plays 0/0 str and fitness chars that are very underweight, and peaceful!
