What region are you in?
To the point where it will just stop working at the wrong times. Like near a horde.
A van has a higher volume yeah, but if you cleared out the blcoks near you you should have no problem. Also you will be faster than zeds unless you took sunday driver.
So you will be able to outmove them, and therefore lose them, so they may wonder towards your direction for a while but will stop.
I would say just back up your saves and keep on trying to get the hang of it. And later on you can do a normal permadeath style game. (Allthough getting a car in apocalypse mode can be achieved within max 0-3 days depending on spawn)
Alternatively engine on - just walk around getting what ya need and then aggro them purposely lead them around until they're grouped then ditch them behind a building and wrap around to your vehicle and make your exit.
Remember, never jog/sprint unless you need to. Conserve stamina. You walk faster than a zombie so you can juke and kite them around as needed. You could also take an alarm clock with you or a digital watch and set a timer for 10 minutes and then place it somewhere - let these things go off to attract them to make things easier.
Lots of ways to do it.
West Point is the most populated area on the map and I've been spawning there alot as of late for a variety of reasons - such as a training ground for this and that. Once you get the hang of it it becomes second nature on what to do and towns like Muldraugh will be easier.
I know i should avoid running them over.
But im still afraid that as soon as i stop my van a load of zombies will keep swarming in making it unviable to walk around the place.
If you don’t go at max gear watch your gear changes; if you stay at low gear and don’t hold w to go faster you coast around as quiet as can be.
I suggest find a gas station or a gun shop. Or just drive up the motorway find a empty region empty regions exist. With completely empty warehouses etc. Have an Explore away from the cities find a quiet gas station with some more vehicles to look at
You had to slam the horn method because they will get less responsive to it over time so it’s the only time you can really get a huge horde going and leading them somewhere
Ah yeah, I was about to say I'm a mad lad and this is one of the things I do. Works wonders! Scout around, honk the purposely to see if the area is safe or not.
One other thing I personally love doing that some see as insane is doing donuts and holding the horn down attracting them until they get close enough where I just floor it to where I need to be and do a quick loot. I like making my character take a deep breath and smoke a ciggerate before I do it sometimes... just to be a badass or something lul. Sometimes I do it for kicks even and will take a expendable car and turn it into a beyblade of a weapon... sod it right? Where I purposely let it hit zeds instead of ovoid.
Consider taking it in trips and loot briefly each time - hit n' runs.
Ah, good yeah, I was about to say this is your best bet for newbies in terms of spawn location. West Point, if you don't know what you're doing is a death sentence otherwise it's a great area with lots of facilities and treasures to be had. Many great base locations if you can clear it etc. I love West Point tbh... as crazy as it sounds.
Factor in the condition of your van as well - the better the condition the quieter it is. That in mind, they are certainly much quieter than shooting a gun off (I did a sound test with the Dart, I had it parked at West Point's church to the South West and there was a house in walking distance - I could hear the engine fade easily the more I walked) but shooting a gun off can have it's advantages.
If you know the tile range your gun makes you can move to a spot where it's almost out of tile range and then fire a shot off to lure them. Ofcourse they'll come in droves but it's waiting game - once you think they've thinned out enough make your move and sneak around back to your original position.
Alot of people wanna think guns are useless but they just aren't creative with it and don't know the limits and what not. I mean, for being on the offense and for an escape a gun does wonders. Say you're in a cramp spot in some building, zeds are blocking the hall? ♥♥♥♥ it, just unload a shotgun shell on em'. It'll clear the way for that escape.
Some more than others
Vans are amongst the loudest vehicles
If paired with a bad quality engine and bad muffler, it is even worse
A specific problem to vans is that they have underpowered engine (most of them...unless specials like ambulance or Spiffo...)
These 280 Hp engines are pure crap considering the mass of a van
So, if you get caught in the middle of a horde with a normal van...good luck...
Now, if you want to drive in middle of a city, no matter the vehicle, you will attract zombies...a loud vehicle will attract more
No matter what, you will have to deal with attracted zombies anyway...kill or lure away, can be done with vehicle too
This is part of using a vehicle...
You can also use your van, exit the city from one side, horning lie crazy...and reenter from the side you want to use as base
It should be a bit more quiet, and 'nothing' should follow you from outside the city anyway
a. start yelling in the looting area attracting the horde and taking them to the large open field and the sprint back to my looting area. if far enough the horde should lose aggro, and you might need to deal with a few stragglers
b. in this situation I would have a disposable emergency vehicle, so this might not be the case. But I would bring said vehicle to that field and leave the siren on. of course you would have to determine a good hiding place nearby that you can sprint to in the meantime. Sirens are insanely powerful noise tools.
c. do as stated above in "a", but instead of leaving them, have a molotov and lighter ready, and start the zombie burn train.
