But some basic stuff;
1. Sheets and clothing can be made into Ripped Sheets that can be used as makeshift bandages until you can get into a med supplies POI.
2. Sheets and clothing can also be used to make Sheet Rope which can provide you with an emergency upper floor exit route (will also need hammer and nails).
3. Warehouse run(s) should be a priority for necessary tools like Axes and Nails. You can also find Saws, Screwdrivers, Sledgehammers, etc.
4. If you have the meta events enabled and you hear the helicopter, run or drive away from your base. Dont go back home until the heli goes away.
5. Stealth is your friend. Guns, particularly in populated areas, are not.
I'll stop at five. There is so much detail to this game and there is definitely a learning curve but it is so much fun!
PZ Wiki isn't always up-to-date, but in general, it has been a reliable source of info.
1) Sure everyone goes on a food rampage early in the game salvaging what they can, but this is an area where you can set yourself up for the future.
a) Prioritise your finds on thier shelf life (so no just living off crisps and chocolate for the first few days just because its easier than getting your head around cooking).
b) use those ealry plentiful perishable foodstuffs to develop and learn your cooking.
c) Store tinned reserves for later, many of the alternative foods will not be as plentiful if you make it to winter.
2) Specialize. I always suffer from the manic tendancy to try and master all the skills. Not only will the point limit eventually stop you but also you will find that when the going gets tough (especially for combat or gathering food) you will find that one good skill is worth considerably more to you than 3 half baked ones.
3) Cowardice is a virtue. Unlike most other games out there, this only takes a momentory lapse for everything to go south very quickly.
a) If in any doubt run.
b) Using a large weapon might not be fair on the Z's but its safer.
4) Bases, Dont put all yoru eggs in one basket. I'm incredibly guilty of devoting all my efforts to building a nice base only to eventually have it overun by zombies (unless you do some game mechanic cheese building) at least for some periods until it is safe to clear out the remnants.
Have backup bases to tide you over (Many now choose a car for this but I remain concerned about reported trunk shrinkage issues so i stick to bricks and mortar for storage).
5) Turn off the lights,... infact turn off everything when you are not using it. It only runs a high risk of drawing Z's towards your base. In addition cookers can start fires and once you are off the Grid you will want to have all the tricks for conserving energy down to a fine art.
With all these pointers though (many of us could go on at length) Don't forget to enjoy the game, the mistakes are half the fun. I deliberatly still make some mistakes on setup for characters. Sure I could pick all the nice traits to have a hench character who is pretty handy. But lets be honest here, its often more fun to help the podgy misfit character to survive rather than the character you built cherry picking stats.
1: Find water either use some water bottles if you can find them or fill up a bowl
2: Find a backpack
3: Find the nearest Pharmacy and load up on medical supplies
4: Find a place outside of town you can use to read books and survive a bit
5: Find car keys by searching glove boxes and seats
6: Choose a melee weapon either a Baseball bat or an Axe and start raising accuracy by killing
7: Raise some survival skills like Cooking or Foraging
8: Try to have fun
9: Play online in a multiplayer server
10: Try to have fun
