Project Zomboid

Is there any way to fortify a safe-house besides barricades?
Besides the obvious Planks/Metal Sheets/Bar barricades on the Windows/Doors, how do I keep the Zombies out of my home?

I hear a lot of talk about blocking off entrances with cars, and I tried that (with some success), but it's a bit impractical for larger areas.

I've tried moving furniture in front of Windows/Doors but zombies seem to be able to just phase right through them...

So is there any other ways to fortify besides plank barricades and player-built walls?

move to second floor and take out the stairs

No, you've got it all. Barricading windows, placing cars on the way, furniture as well, and, of course, full sized walls.

Yep, it is walls and barricades mostly

Cars eventually, but they only work when you are close
When you not there, they dont stop zombies as they dont count as walls
So, zombies can enter 'inside' the base

Furnitures dont really work for the most part
Don't forget you can make stockade walls out of just logs and rags.

Planning your walls to account for sound is helpful. So making sure they're at least ten or so tiles from your safe house will help keep something from just wandering by and hearing you doing your day-to-day inside the main structure. Also visibility blocks i.e. not just wrought iron fence if you putter around outside.

And make sure you patrol any walls you build, because zombies can eventually knock them down.

You can destroy the windows/doors with a sledge hammer, and build walls instead of them.
You can also box windows/doors with 3 walls.

Metal work allows you to place better barricades.

ive never seen a metalworking barricade get destroyed, its essentially just a metal cover for your window >_>

they do get destroyed, it just takes WAY longer time for the zeds to get through. but , given enough time, they will tear through.
so, do you inspection and clearing runs.

I see you're a man of rope ladder culture as well.

For the question, there are also areas with very high walls that are zombie-proof, and they give you more options to concentrate your defences over a small vulnerable area. See gated communities, near some schools, upper class areas, and car wrecking yards.

Early on you can also build wooden frames, just to keep agressive zombies occupied (they will get stuck destroying them, while you can just pass through. Once you've got enough Carpentry, finish up the frames with T3 walls, which are impenetrable.

Other than that, cover all windows with sheets to keep the lights on safely, dont use electronics on high volumes and don't jog around the house if you're not prepared to defend the house. Keeping to these allow you to live without a second floor pretty reliably.

I don't think any walls are impenetrable, unless you plaster them that is

And I don't say they're all impenetrable. Wall frames can be destroyed pretty quickly, and T1-T2 walls can be destroyed over extended periods of time. I think that zombies actually can climb through wooden frames and T1 walls without destroying them sometimes. However, I've never seen any T3 wood/metal walls or metal fences being destroyed by zombies.
