How do you survive without a generator?
Has anyone been successful without using a generator or three? I see the biggest thing is food preservation. I have almost 2000 hours into the game and can't seem to make jarring work. Jars are very few and it looks like you lose a lid everytime you open one. Also, sugar and (especially) vinegar are very hard to find. There are mods to address these, but even then you need higher level skills to craft those items (as well as other limited items).

So, I try to start a game w/o a generator and then I run into one or two and can't resist.

Have you been successful w/o a generator? If so, how? Thx.

Basically you farm, fish, trap, and forage constantly. It just like a normal play through with freezers but you learn to live on worms if your food stores are empty. Stocking up on preserves does help relieve the need to live off of worms...

The game has been playable for like 4 years without generators (or without infinite fuel which is the same in practice...)

A mix of trapping / fishing / farming / worms and co..., plus the tons (literally...) of packaged food to loot was more than enough to live for years
And you didnt even had cars....all by foot

Generators just makes it much easier

Now, jars and co...useless in my opinion because way too rare
Seems like some balancing is due for these

@Geronimo - thanks for your input... @Ficelle - I see you are playing rimworld... that is one of my favorite games... have over 4000 hours in it... wish they would make a version where you can play vs. another player where the other player can plan the invasions.. that would be cool. Gets redundant vs. the AI after a while, but MAN is that an amazingly well thought out game. PZ could learn so much from it..

How do you handle the huge debuff for eating worms?
Ficelle Sep 15, 2019 @ 5:31pm
Rimworld is one if my favorite games too...but im far from 4000 hours ,D
It is probably a favorite of many people anyway, such an incredible game

PZ is on shelves...waiting for animations...

Eating worms is a last thing to do if you have no other solutions
Honestly, food is so easy to get (and conserve) that there is little point in this version of the game
Still, it is cheap and easy

Fighting the mood debuff ?
Books and co...or live with it for a while
Go loot a bookstore and you can come back with like 100+ books

Knda agree food is a bit to easy, farming should be impossible for half the year, trapping should be recuded greatly. And forageing should be very close to zero,l in the winters anyways!

Only really fishing trapping kinda makes sense in winter time. And that would be reduced as well
And yea preseveatives should be a bit more common to surve the winter if other stuff gets harder.

And im not sure the cars makes a good argument :P you could basicallly run the whole map in like 45-60 min, longer than most cars now will go on a tank of gas.
You would not get hurt from overburden, weirdly enough the cars are a downgrade from whay running used to be!

Cars help compared to 'by foot' because of the loot capacity

A good car (with organized trait which i tend to use) can carry like 200 kg worth of loot in addition to your bags
This is a lot and it makes loot runs much more efficient

Plus the safety provided you dont do stupid things like driving into a gigantic horde or bumping into everything....
Add in a portable zombie lure with the horn
And the speed of course, without the need of high sprinting / fitness

I find (good) cars a great help personnally
Gas, i dont find it a problem as i secure a gas station very early into the game and keep it clean of zombies with regular patrol / cleaning
I also always keep a gas can or 2 into my car...just in case

i havent done this, but you could survive the growing season easily and into the winter time without gennys by farming by time and crafting meals. you can plant a new crop every other day to stagger the harvest time. you get 2 weeks before food rots. any meal you prepare gives you 2 more weeks. salads only need bowls. I had 1 playthru that had so many boxes of jars and vinigar everywhere. but even jarred food goes bad. but if you trap or fish with your grown food meals it would last a long time. get growing and trapping and leave your cans for when you really need them and never need gennies.
You can, but its one of the better parts to cook and to fill your fridges.

I started a new character recently and just foraged for worms, later crickets, if you use a bowl to turn them into worm/bug salad theres no debuff and the food supply is infinite. After that I made my goal to upgrade to -nicer- food, farming different crops and trapping, all the rotten food goes into the mulch bin for fertilizer, I've never used a genny to be honest. Worth noting in multiplayer plants grow when you are offline, so its much easier to live on farming. Also food will last you longer if you wait until you are hungrier.

Hmm nice find with the bowl, good to know. Yeah it is a waste of food to only eat when peckish.

when farming wait until the plants are seeding then harvest. that way you will get lots of seeds. but keep a close eye on the crops at the late stage. if you leave them seeding too long they will all turn rotten.

"Seeds" come at level 7 growth of the plant even though you can harvest them at level 6 (without seeds) so it's better to wait a few more days..

Ok thanks for the help.
