The shake means its hindering the combat, it doesn't mean Its increasing.
Yeah same thing happened to me. I usually took hemophobic only when I wanted to play veteran. As the veteran trait actually easily mitigated the panic. So in my first build 41 run i noticed my char is constantly stressed out as well. Until for some reason he was not. Then i tried to maintain the stress level with books and what not but did not work, the stress level constantly rose. So i thought back hard and figured maybe soap did the trick since i once washed all his clothes. So i did it again.(Found two soaps after two weeks in game.) And it worked. To confirm i checked on the net, and i found a mention about the new hemophobic mechanic.(I think was a dev diary not 100% sure.)
Instead of hemophobic i always take peaceful now. If you employ a good two handed weapon like the wood axe(or as i refer to it greataxe) the peaceful negative will not affect you that much. Allthough i do not know how much less damage you make but probably around 30%.
Also lucky and smoker are a great combination too. Sadly i never dare to take it as i know how my luck usually is in such games:)(even with traits or abilities boosted!)
Hah just noticed...shows how i have not started a new char for a while.
The last change has updated hemophobic trait to a -5 instead of -3!
