You can still do it but they have to be stunned. For example if you hit them first, you have a small window of time when you can do it while they're recovering from the hit.

Still works pretty well without being absolutely broken like it was before.

Wouldn't consider it broken, they're zombies, not Krav Maga practitioners.

Anyway it needs to be re-implemented, the way it is now makes knives, pens or any type of edged weapon that goes in the same category, more or less useless. I never pick them up anymore due to this change, before I used to always pick up any pens I could find. Since they broke on one use they we're pretty balanced, due to their abundance.

Knives of any sort was a treasure. Now they're just junk, I rather pick a Rolling Pin and that is saying something.

It was pretty OP, you could have a character with no skills invested in combat and in absolute panic destroying hordes because of it

I kill zeds all the time with my knife, you just need to relearn the combat. Once you managed to learn the combat, you can engage a group and kill them all.

It's still doable just not as OP anymore, plus the knife has a good chance of getting stuck if your skill is low.

I know that this thread is a bit old, but hopefully, this will be helpful for someone who seeks help just like me.

So the way the knife jaw stab work is that this is tied to weapon, skill, and chance. The better your weapon, the higher the chance for you to do instant kill is increased, and if your skill is higher, then it will increase the chance even more. Level 10 Short Blade will be more likely to do it than level 0 Short Blade. You can even do the instant kill with a pencil.

If you're doing a sneak attack, it will always instant kill with any level of Short Blade skill you have. You just need to make sure that you don't get spotted or else it will be based on your Short Blade skill and the type of knife you are using.

You don't need to move to do it, and you don't need to stun the zombie to perform the instant kill. Also, make sure that you only fighting 1 zombie, or else the instant kill will be disabled. But if you saw a group of zombies, but they didn't notice you yet, you can perform an instant kill until you get caught by more than one zombie.

Forget to tell you that you need to wait for your survivor to raise its freehand, then you can perform the instant kill from behind or jaw stab if you're in front of the zombie.

After update 41, the ability to instant kill was removed if you are being pursued by 1+ zombies. but at the same time there is execution from behind. in the video that I uploaded, a man makes an instant kill from the back while being chased by 2-3 zeds. I don’t know why you sent me the video above, it doesn’t answer my question

Hows so? Yes you can instakill even if pursued by zombies but is tricky not like before 41 were you can face them

the question is: how? I tried as in the video (hit to stun, go around from behind and strike). But the character still just deals a normal blow. Most likely I'm a noob and I can't do it. But every time the fight is 1 vs 1, I manage to do an instant kill, both in the face and from the back... Could you check and tell me if you can do it?

First of all that video is from 4 years ago.

If i recall well it was changed in 41.27? or so. If you need further elaboration look up the topic short blade users. It is an old topic, that actually was debating how short blades have been altered. (You can check the dates there i mention the issue with multiple zombies being followed getting accidentally an instakill and stunlock animation getting me killed, it was patched like almost immideatly but took 2-3 more patches to fine tune it how it is today.)

If you have multiple zombies within range, i cant recall how many tiles it must be, ( i think it is in one of the developer patch notes), you will not be able to do instakill neither from front nor back. (allthough if not detected it might work against single zombie, if the nearest one is like 6 tiles away or so?)
