To backup a save, you go to Users > [Your User Folder] > Zomboid >Saves. All of your saves will be there, categorized by game type. You just need to copy the save's folder and paste it somewhere safe. In the event that your save becomes corrupted, delete the corrupted folder and replace it with the one you backed up. That's just for Windows, I'm not sure how to backup a save on Mac and Linux.

Once B41 goes stable, all saves for Build 40 and earlier will become incompatible. You'll be able to play them on the 'PZ Classic' branch the devs said they'll be implementing, but you will not be able to use the same save in Build 41. You'll have to make a new one.

Currently beta build v41 does not have MP because of performance reasons.
Before it goes to stable build, it should have MP working.

Only the 'server' will keep all the files. If you are the server, then you can backup the MP save files the same was as @max said above.

How often does it save. I have tried alt+f4. But it still loaded exact moment of the game I was on when I relaunched.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
