Can I only paint crafted, plastered walls?

I made my base in an old motel next to a trailer park, and was hoping I could paint the motel rooms different colors. But I can only paint markings and such, I thought maybe I could plaster the wood walls of the motel and then it'd work, but no such luck, I assume you can only plaster crafted walls.

Any way to paint pre-existing walls in the game world or am I stuck with the motel wood paneling?

Unfortunatly you can't. The only way i can think of is to destroy, rebuild, plaster and paint. Not the easiest, but it's up to you.
