I'm betting for your statement to be true it'd have to be so narrow a set of circumstances as to demand specifics. I move furniture of all types around often with no difficulties.
Possibly under very specific circumstances. I just tested this under four different environment conditions (The three stock difficulties and a random sandbox) and I could not duplicate the problem.
You can drag a lone piece to a tile with enough capacity to deal with it. (eg large fridge has 2x40# pieces. You can drop a single piece to a tile that has no more than 10# present on the ground)
If you've found something anomalous, then get your savegame to a mod or provide a pastebin.
