How do I invite a friend to my server?

I started a server now how do I invite people to it?

When you are in the game, press ESC and then select Invite Players.

I did that they were told they were invited but didn't have an opton to join

The game needs to be closed for them to join. So they need to close the game and then be invited. Then accept the invitation from the steam chat and it should work.

I'm able to join my husband by opening the steam overlay, right clicking on his name on my friends list, and clicking "join game". He needs to be past the loading screen (the one that says "this is how you die"), which means I couldn't begin to make my character until he was completely finished making his.

I was invited the first time we played (which sent me a steam message with a join link), and in future games my name already said "invited" on his esc menu without him having to do anything. I can just hop in as I please. If I try to join using ingame methods, I get stuck on a screen waiting for permission to join and the invite menu doesn't seem to do anything.
