White skull next to name tag

Playing with my buddy for the first time and he got a white skull next to his name while we were playing, what does that mean? im assuming it means he is going to die (sorry if its a stupid question im still pretty new)

It means he enabled PVP. It's the green axes in the corner of the screen. They'll turn red when activated.
