Local Host a game through router?
I have had this game for a while, and I just purchased it for my son so we can play multi-player.

We would like to play it through the local router, rather than having to go through steam (all the way out, then all the way back in, for both computers.) Is there an option for doing this to limit the amount of traffic through our already too-slow cable hook-up?

I can do this with Minecraft, it just hits the router through a port and is fast. I just wondered if this option was available. I have played on servers, but the ping is usually pretty bad.

Ok I was curious about how to do this so I went ahead and figured it out for anyone who stumbles upon this from google.

You have to start both the client and the server with the -nosteam option. Then putting the LAN IP in the server join menu works.

Right click on Project Zomboid in your Library.
Click on Properties then Set Launch Options.
Type in -nosteam.
That's it!

If you are running a dedicated server hover over Library and then click Tools from the drop down.
Right click on Project Zomboid Dedicated Server.
Click on Properties then Set Launch Options.
Type in -nosteam.

Hope this helps!

I recommend this guide.
You could set up a dedicated server and connect to it through the local host.
Other then that I haven't seen a LAN option here.
Have you tried just putting in the local IP of the host computer when trying to connect? Try putting it in both the IP and Local IP (I don't know if this field even does anything anymore) and see what happens.

How to connect Project Zomboid through LAN?
Wow, thanks!
I will have to try this tomorrow.
How would I figure out what IP address to put in?
If I type 'ipconfig' in a cmd.exe, would it be the IPv4 address?

Yep that will give you the correct address.
Ok, so I got it to work using the ProjectZomboidServer.bat. Is there anyway to change the game settings, such as zombie density, loot rarity, respawn timers?

I did not see that in the tutorial above. And using the bat file does not give options to change settings. So there must be something else I am missing?
I found it. UserId/Zomboid/Server/
And there are ini and lua files you can muck around with.

Not trying to be a ♥♥♥♥, just wanted to let you know that instead of saying hosting through router, the proper way to describe what you wanted in a title would be more like "How to host a lan server" or "How to play over lan on a dedicated server".

Once again, sorry if this seems condesending or anything, its just that it might help you in the future if people either don't understand what you want or you are posting in a place where technical terms would help (like on reddit or an official forum).

Also, hello from a fellow Missourian :D

Tell that to the other 2 that resurrected it before I also decided to comment my guy.

Edit: Also you decided I was the one to respond to after giving solid advice when this isn't even the first time it was done, it was also necroed in 2022.

I responded to the last reply, and the only one who directed their comment at me from a very old thread title. The other people were discussing the topic, not complaining or talking to me directly.
Don't take it so seriously.

This thread is so old the moderators should close it.
