Filling up cars

Can it only be done with a fuel can and not straight from the pump? Or am I being stupid?

You can indeed fill up from the pump, assuming the electricity is still on or you're powering the station with a generator. Move you car up to it, get out, and when you right click on the car there should be a "fuel from pump" option (or something similar).
