Looking to buy... Steam or GOG?

So I have recently been looking at getting some games on GOG. I have tons of games with Steam and don't like the idea that I don't actually own the game if Steam ever shuts down, but I'm locked in already so to say. I noticed that PZ actually went on sale on GOG and now suprisingly on Steam. GoG lets you can play your games without a client, gives you a DRM free version, and I guess with GOG Galaxy you can still play on Steam?

Anyone else have the game on GOG but still play on Steam? Just curious, there seem to be tons more games on GOG and for a bit cheaper...

Wow! Thanks for all that information. I like that GOG is adding some existing games that I own on Steam to my GOG account. I like the idea of purchasing the game once. I have heard others on here say the puchased PZ on both, one to play on Steam with friends and one to get the DRM free. So how does one get PZ DRM free with Steam? Thx.

- GoG does provide classic installers to play games without Galaxy, but generally, beta builds require Galaxy to work

- Galaxy doesn't exist on Linux, so no beta builds there

- GoG users and Steam users exist in separate ecosystems in terms of MP. GoG can't play on Steam-enabled servers. Steam users have to disable Steam to play with GoG members

- No Steam workshop support. You'll either have to get copies from the modder, figure out how to use SteamCMD to pull specific workshop content, or get workshop content some other way and pull the files out, placing them in their relevant directory

- Builds on GoG may be delayed by a few days (especially Linux, as GoG doesn't provide an easy release mechanism for it - they do it themselves, after we upload it through FTP, manually), as it's more difficult to upload to than Steam.

This isn't to say GoG is bad by any means. It's all down to preference and convenience.

Yea, I caught that but didn't understand how that works. I guess I'll have too Google it and find out. Couldn't find anything on PZ website where to download the DRM free version if I purchased it on Steam. Thx for the info.

There isn't a version that has DRM. All versions are DRM free.

So does that mean you can get a download copy to install without using Steam?

It means the copy you get from Steam doesn't need Steam to play.

In the installation directory, there's a few files ending "json." You can edit them in Notepad.

This is the setting you change:

-Dzomboid.steam=1 becomes -Dzomboid.steam=0

That's pretty much all the difference between the two platforms.

i think they could just get the mod files from steam, but it is more convienient

Purchased it on Steam before the sale was gone.
