This game is quite hard at first and Survival is mostly for people with some experience
Play One week later
It is the zombie apocalypse, not the zombie minor annoyance
Probably some more easiness compared to Survival
Still, it is the zombie apocalypse, dont expect an easy game with a zombie here and there conveniently awating to be killed by the superhero
You could also just play Sandbox
There are all the presets settings for you to see the exact differences
And you can make your own too
Also do not use fire weapons until you know the game a bit.
Come back in survival mode after you've survived at least 1 month in One Week Later mode.
If you're still not ready just go in sandbox mode with One Week Later presets and make it a little bit more difficult.
What traits do you pick for character creation?
How do you die most of the time?
I pick Fire Officer for the sprinting and stout traits, and cats vision for better night seeing.....
I usually die by accidentally getting bitten and infected and can't make bandages, or can't find a well secured house to at least put curtains up on all the windows. I never die from hunger/thirst.
Still takes mods to bring the zombies to life though.
I suggest you watch some video tutorial for combat. It is the most important thing to master as a beginner if you want to survive, you'll always eventually get into a fight with zombies even if you avoid it as much as possible. It's like a military from the special forces not knowing how to fight, right?
A random video i've found for you:

Think about rebinding your keys as well to get the most of it.
If you use 1 2 3 keys you'll gain a crazy amount of time to switch between your weapons.
After a zombie kill, always do a 360° look around. ALWAYS!
Personal advice: Do not enter a house by the window. Your character will take some time to land on the ground and if several zombies are waiting for you on the sides (where you don't see) maybe you'll just have time to push or kill one of them but the one in your back could bite/scratch you.
I always secure an area before looting it. One tip to do so:
When entering a house, DON'T RUN and close every door you can find. When everyone is killed outside of the rooms you have closed, open these one by one. That way you can handle less zombies easily.
You have to have seen some of the classical zombie movies of the past (70s) to understand, why the zombies in PZ are as dumb and slow, as they are.
Some of us (like me) really despise the way zombies are depicted in some modern movies. Like being able to open doors, climb on ladders, sprint and whatever else...
In the good old days, zombies were thought of, more as a natural disaster than some masses of single enemies. One of them is easy to kill. A group of them is dangerous, although they are slow moving...
I always look around all windows and doors before looting the house, but the thing is:
In One Week Later mode if you scream to get them out of the house they don't hear as good as in survival mode. So some zombies can stay inside and the scenario i warned OP about can happen.
We have different points of view, so that's up to OP now! :)
Tell us how many time you survive!
Q by default i think
I recommend only using this when trying to lure large groups away from an area and not using it to lure them from buildings. You press Q to yell by the way.
I'm also waiting for the animation build because i am at the same point, but still can't find a way to survive the 6 months later mode though.
About attracting zombies nearby when i scream: I always attract the whole street to loose them farther, so that i can clear the house by screaming if some of them are stuck inside and then i can start to secure the house.
I also don't say your way to do it isn't the right one, i mean... It's just amazing to see we don't have the same way to adapt to this apocalyptic world and OP will take the advices he feels right for him! :)
