Preparing for the winter, questions!
Hi everyone, i'm playing in survival mode, and i wanted to know several things!

1) With a high level in foraging, is it possible to get enough food for the winter just by foraging if you start in the summer?

2) Is growing plants in the winter worth it? Do you do it indoors? If yes, with an antique oven turned on all the time? And at which range? (I'm preparing some compost by the way...)

3) Is traping worth it in the winter? At least, does it work?

4) Is canning food with jar lids worth it or is it better to save sugar to make cake batter if you find some eggs for example?

5) Are barricades (iron as well!) protecting you from the cold? Is closing curtains helping to keep temperature warmer with opened/broken windows?

Lots of questions, but useful for everyone! Thanks in advance for your answers! :)

Hi! I'm just finishing my first winter so I can try to give you some advice.

1) I didn't bother with foraging at all, so I'm not sure if it is viable. My character had so low level in foraging that I wasn't able to test this.

2) Farming seems to work during winter too. It just takes longer for plants to grow and harvesting will give less yields. I was actually a bit disappointed with this because I was expecting it to be impossible during cold weather and snow. You can have your farms outdoors just like during the summer. I had prepared by hoarding a lot of food, but it could have been possible to just farm almost like during the summer.

3) Fishing and trapping work fine during winter.

4) In my opinion it is much easier to just get two or three ice-cream fridges and freeze your vegetables and meat. They will stay in a pretty decent condition during the entire winter. Just defrost the amount you need each day. I recommend building a small house and connect a generator to it. Then place your fridges and refrigerators there and keep the house powered at all times. The gasoline will last longer if the house is quite small.

5) Just try to find padded trousers and padded jacket. That's all you need :) Your character should be just fine even when the temperature drops to its lowest point.

For me the most difficult part during winter was driving during hailstorms because it was difficult to see the road. Also keep in mind that the sun sets earlier during winter so it will be really dark quickly.

Hope this helps!

Can you sow seeds when it’s below freezing, or is the ground too hard?
WillieSea Jul 31, 2019 @ 2:57pm
Kentucky is in the South of the US, so it does not have deep freezes. And even the winters can be on the mild side, compared to further North. So I do not see it as a problem that crops grow slower, or that you can grow crops in winter.

It might make sense to change it, if we ever get a cellar. Those are used to store things over the winter like potatoes, apples, wheat, and what-ever, before the advent of refrigeration.
Triangular Brick Jul 31, 2019 @ 2:57pm
1) Hmm if someone could tell us about this it'd be nice! I'm playing with the park ranger occupation by the way!

2) It's working outside really, even when it's freezing? Wow i didn't expect that at all!
Maybe you had enough with your farm because you had a high farming skill (which is my case).
It would be nice if someone has some experience to share about indoors farming! ^^

3) That's something nice to know, thanks! :) I didn't try both that much so i think i'll keep it for the winter only!

4) Oh, yeah... It was kind of logical to me not to think about freezers because i don't play with eletricity, maybe you'll understand more why i asked this question now haha ^^

5) I didn't find any padded trousers for now but i'll try to get one then, i didn't really know about this clothing part, thanks! :)
But what about rain and snow with the wind, is it affecting you with this kind of clothes?

I do not use cars as well, but i think i'll use it to go to another town. I'm that kind of guy that lives in the middle age: No gas, no electricity xP

I'm playing mostly at night to not be spoted and loot easily so it's not a problem for me, i'm playing with cat's eyes trait!

Thanks for the tips! In fact, winter doesn't seem that terrible... For now, in this build.

You cant forage food in winter
Farming and fishing work at a reduced rate
Trapping works too, not sure if reduced or not, i dont trap a lot

If one doesnt waste non perishable food, getting a huge stockpile for winter is quite easy
Every house / restaurant... has some, plus specialized stores
More than enough to last the whole winter and some more

But the main thing is generators, allowing freezers...
With freezers, it is very easy to keep huge amount of perishable food
All the surplus from foraging / farming...etc you get in other seasons...hop, freezers

Now, if you dont use electricity, no freezer for you
Well, non perishable food i guess....with a bit of farming / trapping...etc
Harvaturri Aug 1, 2019 @ 12:46am
1) Ok, so foraging food during winter doesn't work. No wonder why I was getting only rocks and sticks :) I thought that foraging food during winter would work as farming does too.

2) I haven't tested this but I doubt that farming would work indoors. That would need a concept like a greenhouse or something, and I don't think that exists in the game. Growing plants need sunlight and I don't think getting sunlight inside a building from above (through the roof) is possible. But of course this should be tested to be sure. Maybe this would need a special kind of building that the game considers it to be inside, but where a part of the building wouldn't have a roof or something... not sure if this is possible currently.

3) Yes, at least trapping seems to be plentiful enough during winter.

4) Ok, it makes sense now if you are trying to play without electricity. That certainly makes things a little more difficult :) I tried using jars for preservation once and it didn't seem very viable because it's possible to use those jar lids only once and it's difficult to find more of them. There's plenty of sugar and vinegar so that's not an issue. You probably won't find many eggs in the game anyway so if you are ever going to bake a cake in the game it's during the first weeks or so :)

5) Padded clothing seem to completely block any hailstorms, chilling winds and freezing temperatures during winter so no need to worry about that. You can stay outside as long as you want with padded clothing. Still sometimes during winter there will be regular rain too and you will get damp so having an umbrella with you is recommended. Hopefully in the next update padded clothing will look more realistic than now. At least on female characters it now looks like they are wearing a t-shirt

One other thing to note during winter is that you can't melt snow and use it as drinking water. So you will need other ways than rainwater to get fresh water like using a well or filling your cooking pots in a lake.

1) Non-perishables found through foraging are very helpful for winter, especially if you don't have power or a reliable generator to refrigerate perishables with. Grape leaves, violets, and rosehips require the Herbalist magazine or trait, and frogs require a foraging level of 7 to find. Stockpiling these helps a lot, but they lack the calories and nutrition to keep your weight up - if you rely solely on these, you will probably become underweight, even if you eat a lot. Healthy weight is between 75 - 85. Meats, sweets, and junk food help you gain and keep weight; if you have none of them, you might find yourself in a bit of trouble if nutrition is enabled.

2) I don't farm often, so I can't answer this.

3) Trapping and fishing both work in winter, though it is twice as difficult. Fish stocks deplete twice as fast, and traps are half as likely to catch something. Still your best option for fattening food, though, if you lack non-perishables like chips, cereal, and chocolate.

4) Pickling food in jars is a good way to prolong the shelf life of fresh ingredients, but the materials to do so are quite rare in vanilla Zomboid. You won't be able to forage for any kind of food in winter (and eggs require a very high foraging level of 8 anyway), so unless you have some eggs left over, your baking ingredients are best spent on pickling. Or, you could use them to spice up tea and coffee to combat unhappiness and boredom, if you spend long days indoors - especially useful for prolonged bad weather, or if you are recovering from sickness or injury.

5) As far as I know, barricades, windows, and curtains have no effect on insulation. You are either "inside" or "outside", with inside being more temperate (cooler in hot weather, warmer in cold weather) and free from wind and weather effects. Having a fireplace or antique oven is excellent for keeping a large area of your home warm, and to dry off if you get wet from rain or snow. So long as you have a padded jacket, padded pants, and umbrella, you should be fine outside of extreme circumstances like blizzards.

1) FORAGING

Yeah i know foraging in the winter isn't possible, that's why i said get enough food FOR the
winter! ^^

@BARD SLAYER
I heard frogs do not rot as long as you don't butcher the poor beast, is it true?
If so, what other animals (other than insects and worms) can you keep for later?

I have read the herbalist magazine, i just gained 6 free trait points for character creation lol!
And if i fish/trap in the winter (i have tons of worms with my compost + foraging) with my stockpile
of foraged food, would it be enough for my calories?
I also have a stockpile of rotten meats just in case so that i could use it with level (8?) in cooking.

2)FARMING INDOORS

@Harvaturri Hmm you know what? I'll make kind of a little lab to test it this winter and i'll tell you,
unless someone knows the answer already!

3) TRAPING & FISHING

Traping and fishing effeciency reduced in the winter, gotcha guys! :)

@Harvaturri If you say it's plentiful enough, then i wont worry too much about this. But how many traps do you have
and what is your level in this skill? I don't expect it to be taht efficient with my level 2 in traping :/

4) PRESERVING FOOD

Everyone is using a generator with freezers, lots of people of the PZ Reddit do it.

@Harvaturri It's a life choice, but honestly i love it! That means compost is much more important in the game:
Gathering enough compost for the winter (how much, i don't know, i'll test it for you!) is an alternative to
freezers. I have a high level in farming so i have lot's of rotten cabages -> More compost.
I have also thrown the rest of the early game's rotten fruits/vegetables into the compost bin. Not to mention that looted rotten vegetables/fruits are being recycled as well.

@Ficelle
That's right, it's an easy way to keep food fresh, but i do not use any freezer, i'm working with a cycle for my plants in the garden, and the surplus is not lost because i'm filling 3 compost bins. It's just another solution, and it makes more sense to all my questions! :)
So i think with 2 crates full of non perrishable (factory made) food should be enough, right?
I'm living at Twiggy's bar so i left the non perrishable food in the Gigamart just in case everything goes wrong for food.
I'm only looting far from here to not have to travel in the winter, who knows what could happen, especially if i'm injured...

I think i'll level up my foraging skill a lot so that i could find eggs if jar lids are not that worth it.
It's a shame the item is consumed to make canned food, hopefully they'll change it :/

5) WEATHER AND CLOTHING

Ok i'll bring my umbrella in my travels, unless my outdoors man trait will protect me from the cold?

@Harvaturri Yeah even in a ski suit you can feel it's cold when it's wet. #TrueStory
I think it'll be changed in the animation build, don't worry about skins, clothing and hairs, it'll be changed! ;)

I didn't know why, but i was almost sure about this... Well, rain collector barrels (combined with faucets) + river is the way to go. And if it rains a lot, cooking pots outside.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OTHERS

It would be nice that you could build a water container, put perishable food inside of it from the garden, and then when it freezes with cold (enough) temperatures and then it acts like a fridge.
1 more day (or even a week if the cold lats for long?) to keep your food fresh without eletricity could be nice if you plan to go far away.
If some of your plants get sick you could have some food left until your other plants grow.
Yeah, yeah, a no electricity guy idea... :P

Sorry if i did some mistakes, i rearranged this topic a bit to keep it readable because we have more tips and tricks, which is a good thing, keep it up guys! :)

I would say, dont bother too much about food

It was very doable before generators

Non perishable food is everywhere and there is more than enough on the map for a solo player to last multiple winters just using it and nothing else
Chips, cereal, chocolate, rice, pasta, canned food...there is some in each and every house
Very easy to store multiple crates before winter
Plus, it is very high calorie food, great

Foraged food can be stored and kept for winter too, easy to make surplus
Insects, worms, violets...etc
Not sure about the calorie, think it is zero....not good
No berries storage without freezer of course

I never use jars and stuff
Way too rare to be of any practical use
Harvaturri Aug 1, 2019 @ 4:51am
Thanks for combining all the notes in a single post :) It is easy to read.

I'm about to try this "indoor farming" too in my current game but I'm not sure if I'm able to finish my experiment during the ongoing winter (it's 21st Feb, and I believe spring should start in March? Not sure yet...).

I've had these traps so far during this winter:
3 mouse traps = mice and rats (bait: chocolate)
3 wooden cage traps = squirrels and rabbits (bait: cereal, tomatoes or potatoes)
3 snare traps = rabbits (bait: tomatoes or potatoes)
3 stick traps = small birds (bait: worms or cereal)
1 trap box = so far nothing :) I have only just started testing this out with tomatoes...

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1821730738

I have placed them all in a single location side by side (wild animals don't seem to care about that). It's a short run away from my winter base and I visit those traps about every other day or so. Once most of my traps were ravaged by a zombie horde so that is one thing to be aware of.

So far I have about 18kg's (or whatever the weight unit is...) of meat in my fridge and it's piling up so I'm not consuming them as fast as I'm getting more meat. Trapping level of my current character is only 2.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1821738192

Yes, it would be nice to have more means of preserving food in this game like drying racks and a ground cellar (kind of like a potato cellar), or just a deep hole in the ground to keep food cool. Also during winter when it's freezing outside it would be kind of logical that food would stay fresh longer when kept in your inventory or in a box outside but I don't think this game works that way, though :)

Frogs don't rot, die, or expire in any way; you can stockpile them indefinitely, until you are ready to butcher them. Frogs are the only creatures that work this way; birds, rodents, and fish all go stale and rot, even if left unbuchered.

I don't know how much of what resources you have stockpiled, but it sounds to me like you aren't struggling to find enough food. Starvation is not difficult to avoid, but managing nutrition in winter can be challenging. Here's a quick breakdown of how nutrients work:

Nutrients

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are used in determining potential weight gain. This value is ignored unless the player has consumed more than 1200 or 1700 carbohydrates, resulting in a multiplier of 2 or 3, respectively.
Maximum: 1000
Minimum: -500
Proteins
Proteins currently have no function, however there is evidence of a potential future use within the source code.
Maximum: 1000
Minimum: -500
Lipids
Lipids, previously called fats, are used in determining potential weight gain. This value is ignored unless the player has consumed more than 1200 or 1700 lipids, resulting in a multiplier of 2 or 3, respectively.
Calories
Calories are the main weight determining nutrient. This value must be balanced with hunger consistently, or else obesity or anorexia may sneak up on the player.
Maximum: 3700
Minimum: -2200

https://pzwiki.net/wiki/Nutrition

^If you want to dig through the formulas, or read the tables of nutritional values for each food item, it's all there. So long as you keep your weight between 75 and 85, you'll be perfectly fine. Again, weight management is a lot more difficult than simply keeping yourself from starving.

I think it wouldn't be the same story in the 6 Months Later mode, even if you are in a solo game.
Which game mode do you play with?

Rotten berries/poisonous = more compost to me, simple.

Yeah i think they'll have to change food canning, it'd be nice to be able to make some vinegar thanks to wine for example.

@Harvaturri
You're welcome, it was necessary to clean this thread because it was kind of a mess haha! ^^

The end of the winter is in march if i remember, cabbages take like 2 weeks to grow. I think you won't have time for that, but you can still try farming indoors. Or maybe try out the compost?
Maybe growing plants is a bit faster in march and april and starting from may it's even more efficient, i don't really know about this.

Radishes and carrots have a max amount of water to not reach, so maybe these 2 plants are worth growing indoors in the winter?

Can you use your canned food as a bait? I mean i don't know if your canned food becomes several tomatoes when you uncan it for example or if you can add it in a cooking pot.
I prefer keeping factory food for me instead of giving it away to animals. Selfishness? Maybe! But i think i'd prefer to keep factory food away from animals to keep some more fats and happiness bonuses.
I think i'll use some vegetables for traping.

So 10+ traps should be enough if you are doing well with 13, ok! Having various traps also mean different meats -> Happiness bonus when cooking. Smart.
For your trap box, maybe try growing some carrots for the indoors farming test, you'll have a higher chance of catching rabbits. (it's the only thing you can catch with tomatoes with this trap)

You're not afraid of trees do you? Be careful because traps can attract zombies hidden in trees, and if they come when you are checking your traps, you could have some surprises... '-'
I have used 2 box traps and 1 of these have been broken by a horde, they were attracted to it.
That's why i'll build a wall around i think. It's working with cells so i think it won't prevent me from catching anything.

Have you ever had animals breaking your traps? How often do you check your traps?

More food preserving means should be a suggestion to post on The Indie Stone forum, we should ask for it together for it to have more chance to be seen by the devs. And this jar lid thing too... :|

@BARD SLAYER
Ok so frogs have evolved during apocalypse to eat cardboard, wood, and metal in order to survive. Good to know! xD
No need to feed them or to keep them fresh means foraging is more rewarding.
Honestly i didn't focus that much on gathering food, and i live near the Gigamart and have a big garden, 7 tiles per specie (by growing time order): Cabbage, Tomato, Potato, Brocoli. There are not affected by "max watering". I do not grow strawberries because it rots too quickly, carrots and raddishes are affected by max watering so rain can kill them.
7x4 plots of vegetables + 3 composts bins and 2 rain barrels (i'll build 1 or 2 more because i'm eating lots of soups and i'm sterilizing rags).
Then i have like 2 or 3 crates of non perrishable food at home.
I'm not struggling for food right now, but i just love to learn more means to survive on a VERY long term basis.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1821803532

I used to play with the nutritionist trait, but i didn't find it that useful.
I just prefer to eat what i think is right for my character and when i'm loosing weight i'm eating something fat.
Thanks for the accurate values though!
I have started this game with the underweight trait, so that i could cook and eat tons of food in early game. Now i'm 80 but struggling a bit because i don't trap nor fish.
I think i'll gain weight in the winter and solve this problem with fishing and traping, or i could even use my factory made food if there's a problem.
I have gained the stout trait now with strengh level 6!

One thing i could do is keeping my canned food to travel in the winter without thinking about freshness.

Im playing Sandbox with settings between Survival and 6 monthes (closer to 6 monthes) with 2 hours / day
...and i use generators
Of course, 6 monthes is harder, and 1 hour/ day even more

But non perishable food is still everywhere and a car horn / gunshot can lure away any amount of zombies
So, despite the very high zombies number, looting in relative safety is still very possible
And freezers work the same ;D

Yep, i hope they do something about canning
It shouldnt be that rare to find canning stuff
WillieSea Aug 1, 2019 @ 2:15pm
Farming indoors works just fine, and if you create a 'sealed indoors' you will have a heat bonus as well, because indoors is always a bit warmer than outdoors.

The only problem is you have to water the plants because it will not get any rain. So keep plenty of water barrels.
Triangular Brick Aug 2, 2019 @ 9:24am
@Ficelle
Yeah i lure them a lot instead of clearing them for ages, especially if the population is large in the area i want to loot. That way you gain time, save weapons, and get more loot quicker.

@Willie Sea
So i suppose farming indoors is better than farming outside?
