Game is maxing out VRAM
So i have a MSI GTX 1660ti laptop with 6gbs of vram, and 16gbs of ram (i7 8750h). And I have a PC with a MSI GTX 970 with 4gbs of vram and 8gbs of ram (i7 2600).

Having msi afterburner open along with rivatuner, I have been monitoring temps, clock speeds, ram usage, etc while playing the game. I have noticed that while playing, PZ would constantly max out the vram on my 1660ti at 1080p, and that's all 6gbs of vram at 1080p not 1440p or 4k.

The game would use around 8gbs of ram as well, but thats probably because I edited the config file to allow the game to use up to 4gbs, so anything else is because the GPU is going to the system memory as its running out of vram, probably lowering performance too.

I haven't noticed any huge performance hits on my laptop, it runs PZ amazingly well, easily over 200-250fps unlocked, but on my PC/desktop its another story. Having only 4gbs of vram, and 8gbs of ram in single channel, it can barely hold 60-70fps @1440p. Am I the only one who thinks this is strange? I would expect a laptop to have issues at higher resolutions, but I only had a 15-20fps drop if I connected my laptop to my 4k monitor.

Out of all the games out there, this is the one to max out vram? GTA5 with 4k textures and a ♥♥♥♥ ton of other graphics/texture mods, it barely even peaked over 4.5gbs of vram @1080p ultra for me. Yet a top down game that doesn't have these 4k textures, ultra realistic lights, 50+ ai cars and modded real cars can max out the vram.... Okaaaay then?

Indeed strange, can you reinstall the game without the edits and see if it still occurs? Alternatively attach log file from console.

Also!

Try this in ProjectZomboid64.bat

-Xms1200m -Xmx2048m

Does the same happen when you tun 32-bit bat?

Dunno, this is after 5 mins of playing, as soon as I loaded in, vram usage shot up to 4gbs. https://imgur.com/a/dxGwETj

I'll have to try again later on when I have some free time, in school currently, but I did what snek suggested, and reset the .bat file so its using -Xms1200m and -Xmx2048m.

The thing is with my 970 on my desktop, whenever I play this game, it always maxes the vram out. I didn't notice any dips in performance when I went over the 3.5gb mark, as my CPU in my desktop is at least 8 years old and I got it for free so who knows how much life is left in it considering I BCLK oc'd it.

edit

With the game running and not running I'll post some task mgr screenshots along with msi after burner hardware monitor screenshots.

did you discover the problem?
Almost something similar happens to me, it consumes up to 5 GB of vram depending on the playing time

it may be 5 years old but theres still tech savvy people out there. I've had your issue as well rkz seems to be a issue with blood and zombie bodies after killing one zombie vram shoots up 10-20mb having blood splatter on 100 percent and depending how many times you hit a zombie that can be anywhere from 20-30mb of vram on a hit turning on simple clothing for zombies and turning blood down to 0 seems to prolong the games life a bit longer before eventually crashing hell I can play and grind for about 3 or 4 hours before the game just crashes. Lowering texture sizes might help as well just seems to be a issue with this build that zombie blood and bodies are causing issues happy surviving hopefully this fixes your issue for the most part although you will eventually crash again so every 100 or 200 zombies you kill get to a safe spot exit and reload the game to refresh its vram memory.

if youre still running out of vram I only have 4gs on my ancient dinosaur amd piece of trash cause I havent upgraded to new parts cause most games are dog water anyways so I have no primary reason upgrade. Use this and use fps mode in your mod settings to lower vram usage even further https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3119788162&searchtext=every+texture+optimized+

rkz you don't need to use optimized textures if you don't want to just try lowering blood to 50percent or even lower that's the biggest issue in this project zomboid build that and dead zombie bodies even after decaying still staying in memory

This post is absolute nonsense. Educate yourself kid.
Zomboid HAS NO TEXTURE BUFFER. No matter what you do with the textures it will preform poorly ON ANY PC. The devs have stated this is fixed in B42...whenever that is.
The only 2 ways of mitigating this issue is LOWER THE RENDER AREA and REMOVE BLOOD DECALS. Nothing else will give you noticeable FPS increases due to how the game overloads your CPU with tile draw calls.
This issue is years old. Use a search engine. lol :evadebullets:

exactly, I just checked and that was the problem, thank you very much

no problem use fps mode on that mod and leave 50 percent blood textures try and find a happy medium till the devs fix the zombie blood and body memory issue
Ice Mar 28, 2024 @ 4:14pm
I personally haven't tested this but this might clear up vram memory when it rains cleaning the streets? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2956146279&searchtext=rain+cleans+blood

Something to test out yourself
