First impression: Game starts when you find a saw
Am I wildly incorrect in saying that the game doesn't really start until I find a saw? I mean how else do I fortify a shelter, and eventually build one? I can't find a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ saw and to me it looks like until then I just kinda walk around aimlessly looking for one. Because there's really no point in settling somewhere until I can fortify, so I can't stockpile loot and ♥♥♥♥ until I find a saw...

Maybe I'm just playing this wrong? Not sure but seems like a huge gameplay issue.

like the man says, you need to look in the right places to find it,if you want a tip go for the gas station,or the city library, you main find a city map there, in the map, there will be highlighted industrial areas, which have a good chance of having a saw.

you can also download mods that make items(saw included), to spawn in zombies, to ease your research.

I will tell you, the saw is just the beginning :3,you need also a hammer, nails, an axe (especially if the zombies run), and some guns(if you have survivors around).

you can also look for saws in the storage areas of big houses, like their garage.

Sheds, warehouses, storage lockers, hardware stores, all have saws.

You don't even need a saw, since when zombies break doors down, planks will drop on the ground.

You can barricade both sides of a door and window. Double the boards.

Oh word, big props for the map tip, was wondering if that existed, I've found some online but having one in game would be awesome! I got a saw, and yeah now my struggles are axes lol, awesome game though
cool, you are managing your way through, I will advise you as well, to grab a pen, pencil,an eraser, and markers of different colors, so you can make annotations on your map.

You'll find axes in all the same places. They have a random chance to spawn on dead zombies so be sure to check every kill. If you're really desperate you can go downtown and loot hardware stores, but that can be really difficult seeing as the zombie population is really dense there.

When you first start the game, head downtown and loot the hardware stores to get those axes and other supplies. In the first days, the zombie population is usually less than later on. You can also yell at them, to move them out of down town, then you can sneak around them and loot without zombies all over.

An alternative to finding a saw is using any weapon to break down unbarricaded doors. Axes work fastest for this. You can collect planks from broken doors this way.

And if you're having trouble finding axes, you can build stone axes with Chipped stones, tree branches, and (iirc) ripped sheets. It's a good excuse to work those early Foraging levels.

You can also right click on object and then scrap them down. Some require only hammer, other require hammer and saw. So that is also alternative way to get some planks if you only have a hammer.

You don't need to build a base. You could play as a Nomad. Never sleeping in one place twice.
always on the move.
