What does starting year do?
Anything other than just change a variable? Does it change overall population? More technology?

Good question - is it just flavor or something more?

Population is lower, power and water is still working, loot plentiful. It's basically easy mode. I don't know if it increases in difficulty as the months progress.

It decides if you're fending off neighboring rival tribes for meat or if you're fighting robot armies that destroyed humanity milienia before.

But seriously, the world will degenerate over time, the more time that has passed the more haggard the world looks with cracks and weeds all over the pavements, vines up all the walls, ect, ect.

It's the difference between Night of the Living Dead (all just starting, not *that* many zombies, more survivors) and I am Legand (worn out world, very few survivors, lots of zombies).

Thanks for the info on the robot armies 8-)
I really thought (although never touched it) the starting date would also move the date of the apocalyse or how you call that, cause all other settings (how many starting zombis, when to peak. etc seemed all to be set by the starting date.

i think you change starting date and months since apocalypse seperately, but setting the year does affect the default broadcasts of televisions and radios if I am not mistaken
I am trying it in 2091, don't notice much differences at the moment.

It doesn't change anything. It's just flavor, nothing more.

The year doesn't matter much, but the month does. If you set it to start in October, Winter is gonna get you pretty quickly. But if you set it in March you have almost a full year to prepare and stock up for the winter time.

Good point.

The year option is removed in Build 38, as a specific timeframe has been in mind for a long time now.

Makes sense. Nobody will miss it.
