Crash on start/extremely aggravating resolution issue
So first off, I love Project Zomboid. It's a game I turn to when I need some quiet, introspective time. The pace is great, the survival is serious, and it generates great stories. I really respect you guys, and it's been a journey following the development.

My biggest issue is the constant tinkering I've had to do to get the game to work since I bought it several years ago. Sometimes, as bad as I want to play it, it's just too aggravating to get to work.

Whenever I get the urge to play I'm always confronted with a crash on start-up. What follows is an exhaustive google search, and generally over an hour of reading through dated threads to try and diagnose why my game isn't working.

When I first bought the game, I actually couldn't play it at all and it sat in my inventory for months. Eventually, the first time around, it had something to do with conflicting versions of Java on my machine or something. I ended up getting the game to work and had a lot of fun.

Recently, I've returned to your website and read a few updates and watched a few let's plays and felt the familiar urge to survive again. This time, the crash-on-start bug, has become intensley frustrating to deal with, albeit with a temporary solution I've found to play.

Issue: Whenever I start the game it defaults to the resolution 1436 x 873 and it's windowed. I can't play without going to the options and turning off 3D corspes, 3D player models, and double sized textures. That requires a restart. On the second restart I can go to the options and change the resolution to my native 1440 x 900 and toggle full screen. From that point I can play without expirencing any crashes. The problem arises when I go to play it again, I click on Project Zomboid and get a black-fullscreen for two seconds before it crashes. At this point I have to go and delete options.ini again, change the settings, restart, change the settings and play.

I've tried editing the options.ini to my resolution, setting fullscreen to true, and turning off the 3D models and double textures, this results in a crash. I have to go through the motions outlined above to play with any reliablity and I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening.

I'm looking forward to the animations and NPC roleout in the next few months, and I want to thankyou for whoever read this and can help me remedy this issue. Thanks a lot and have a nice day.

TL;DR

Are you playing on the experimental/unstable branch?
Owl Jun 29, 2017 @ 1:08pm
No, I'm playing on the stable branch.

Also, if it's too long for you to read, I don't know why you bothered to respond.
VonPumpkinson Jun 29, 2017 @ 1:45pm
If I did read it, you'll go into detail in everything you did to fix the problem.

What is your computer specs?
What kind of computer do you have?
Owl Jun 29, 2017 @ 2:18pm
Wow, what a simple solution! Thank-you very much Enigma. I ran both the bat files and screenshotted the crash, but right after I ran ProjectZomboid32 and it started up with my previous settings very quickly and with no crash.

If you would like the crash report, I'll post it anyways, but my issue has been resolved. Thanks again, it means a lot!

I had trouble getting a screenshot with everything in it, so I just coppied all the text. I hope that's not a problem. ( I redacted a few things like my username and location)

Yes, upon running the ProjectZomboid32 application from the steam folder the game started in fullscreened 1440 x 900. I did have to turn the 3D models and textures off again.

I've recently updated by drivers (>6months ago). Could that have something to do with it? I'm also using a different monitor than what came with my computer.

I'm using an incredibly dated computer too, an inspiron 580. It has an integrated graphics card, so I have trouble running most games with modern graphics.

Oh I know, I've spent many-a-hours on various support tickets and threads. As it's not in the budget, I've more or less resigned my self to console games, simulations, and non graphic intensive games. Trying to update the drivers was ridiculous. I've also been straight up locked out of several games I've purchased as they've moved to versions of DirectX and OpenGL my computer can't support.

The monitor I'm using is a Hannspree 19' LCD Model Number: HF199H, if that's any help. I could send you the text from the CMD while I'm in game too if that intrests you.

Regardless, thanks again for the assisstance. I'm very pleased with the customer support, and I'm really looking forward to the next couple of dev cycles. You guys are awesome.

Also, after running the ProjectZomboid32 application the second time around, the previous settings stuck without a problem. My computer, if I'm correct, is 64 bit though, does that make a diffrence in performance?
