If they removed him, they would end up removing him entirely, at the tower and in game. I don't think making him forgotten is a way to honor Mr Reddick. Remember how much everyone loved how they killed off Cayde-6? I hated it and was not a day one player.
I dont mean remove him entirely. More like what has happened a few times in film.
Easy example. Babylon 5. The actor who played Senclair had major medical issues and could not continue after season 1. Instead of reaasting they chose to move that character to the background. The role was filled with a new actor with a new character.
I just find that approach rare is all.
In the end though this was a very wise decision for the landscape Bungie faces.
Those are not the same, Zavala is the leader, the one you go to for Vanguard things. I don't think that message about not having anything would work in this case.
They didn't start out totally removing Cayde-6, but they pretty much did. Even the Arms Dealer strike got a new update without him. Unlike B5, we play content from the past that has him, would that continue to be the case or would it be like Cayde-6.
They could also write in a bit of story where Zaval goes out into the field and receives a neck injury slightly altering his voice.
In the end I'm OK with what they did, and yes, it's likely the best choice they had.
