The irony being Bungie is actually the least consumer friendly studio. Activision would be an improvement.
It's amusing that the gist of this article is "Bungie wouldn't sell us their IP, oh ... um ... and they weren't making us enough money, yeah, that's it!", yet when Bungie left Blizzard-Activision and started directing their own "destiny" they began to make a lot more money. Certainly the Blizzard exec was more diplomatic than that, but that's what I think his statement basically boils down to.
It's certainly true that Bungie has done some things that are strongly despised some of the player base, but in general, I disagree. They make a solid game, their price structure is more equitable and open than that of most "FTP" games.
Publishers were trying to copy what Valve did with Steam and Half-Life. Creating their own exclusive digital store cost them a lot of potential revenue.
After Bungie split from their partnership with Activision, it made no sense to continue using the BNET service. So they expanded to Steam/GeForce Now, Google Stadia (defunct), and Xbox Cloud Gamepass (D2 Removed).
_
Also the people suggesting Bungie left because of Activision are partially correct. Bungie claims they made Activision a billion $ in revenue from Eververse alone. Their plan was to earn that revenue for themselves instead. They also had plans to publish mobile games in China. Pay2Win culture is strong in China compared to the West. It was money on the table for Bungie. However, this idea fell apart after Chairman WtP led a campaign against video games, describing them as "poison for the soul." They've since allowed themselves to be acquired by Sony and are chasing a new Marathon-themed game and a Destiny themed mobile game, among other ideas.
Making it sound like the ONLY company that takes away content you PAID for is not OVER monetizing every single thing.
Because two wrongs make a right?
Bungie charges $80 to $100 bucks on a roughly annual basis. That covers all the content for a given year. It's applied equitably across the player-base (or at least the players who want to access any given particular piece of content).
If you think that's unreasonable, I suggest you look at your Netflix bill, or your WoW subscription cost, or the price of a 1.75 to 2.5 hour movie in theaters.
You're not required to pay. The transaction is that Bungie offers entertainment, and puts a price tag on it. You decide if it's worth it to you. If you don't think it's worth it, then vote with your dollar (or currency of your personal localization),
Yeah, they removed some older content (most of which received tepid reviews when it was new). No, no one LIKES the fact that they removed content. But if the choice is "new content at the cost of older content going away" then yes, I will accept that price.
Insanely stupid and weird post.
hot take but honestly i wish they would remove more or atleast make the old content a seperate game like cod does. this game is getting too big
