Time gating the content is so much better because it gives the player something new to do each week. There is absolutely no reason to release it all on day one.
And also makes it easier for those who follow the story.
Just because you didn't see it that doesn't mean it wasn't happening. One of the main reasons seasons were even I produced in the first place was because of players complaining about content drought in D2Y1 and like crafting vs. RNG timegating is one of those issues where Bungie can't possibly please everybody and for now at least they've decided that some degree of timegating is what works best for them.
Show me the posts. Show me the thread where people demanded timegating. I have played since 2017 and people always say they see people complain about rushing through content, but I have still never ever seen it. Even if it were the case the MAJORITY of players complained, bungie doesnt listen to the majority or they would have returned crafting seasonals.
This is being completely obtuse, Bungie put in timegating for only 1 reason: to maximize player retention. Same reason they keep power grind, same reason to remove crafting seaonal weapons. Everything is designed to keep you wasting your time as much as possible for as long as possible. They only way is not to play.
You are strawmanning. Nobody "demanded timegating"; as was clearly said in what you quoted, people complained about content drought. Going months without anything new to do. Timegating is simply Bungie's answer to that; whether its a good answer or not is another discussion. And as for proof, here are some excerpts from a short google, restricted to the timeframe of Destiny 2's first year:
"To my mind, Destiny 2's fundamental issue with lack of content isn't that there aren't enough missions, or destinations to visit, or even types of activity. It is that there is almost no reason to run any of it now." -PCGamer's "Sea of Thieves, Destiny 2, and the problem with games that always need 'more content'"
"I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - this isn’t a typical content drought where the playerbase will spring back to attention with a new watering of DLC. Many people have already left for good. Hope Bungie takes note." -Reddit thread "Destiny 2 active player base falls from 8.4 million to an estimated 600k - 875k"
"While Destiny 2 is still getting regular updates, many players are still looking for more: Despite huge initial momentum, Bungie's popular space shooter ultimately burned out with a lack of exciting loot and replayable content." -Tom's Guide's "9 Games Like Destiny to Scratch Your Loot-Shooter Itch"
