I’ve been playing solo since Destiny 1 and I’ve had no problem at all. The vast majority of activities have public match making for different activities.
The only activities which don’t have match making are high level activities (such as raids) where you would need communication and certain setups which are not guaranteed through public match making
If you're having trouble being let into raids, you can look for tags that say "new player friendly" or "teaching" and the like. That and watching guides on Youtube ahead of time should help massively.
If you want a consistent group to play with especially if you want to regularly run group content such as raids then id recommend looking for a clan. There are plenty out there who are willing to take on new players and teach them but don't just take the first offer that comes along, take some time to find one that at the very least has active players atthe times you tend to play and if you do join one and find it isn't working out then don't feel bad about leaving for one that better suits you.
As for purchasing DLC id hold off for now until you've spent a little more time with the game and have a better idea of whether or not you'll continue playing.
some of those "friendly" lobbies aren't really friendly but i'll keep looking 😅
well I know raids need more players but i'm not sure about dungeons.
would playing story mode and strikes and maybe dungeons if they can be done solo be worth buying dlcs even if I don't do raids?
Dungeons *can* be done solo but take a lot longer and are more punishing because every death means a full wipe. But with 2 or 3 people they do not require any communication or teamwork, so you can just have some random people help with killing enemies and doing damage to bosses.
No, you don't need to do raids to fully enjoy each DLC. Final Shape has you fight the final boss in both a 12-player base difficulty mission and also in the raid, so you still get the same ending experience without doing the latter. Lightfall has a mission where you go into the area of a raid, and so does Witch Queen, so you can even explore parts without even touching the actual raids they come from.
Extra notice about Dungeons, in case you didn't know, Forsaken and Shadowkeep both come with a dungeon (Shattered Throne and Pit of Heresy, respectively) and the Prophecy dungeon is free, but the others are sold seperately as their own thing. Grasp of Avarice is in the 30th anniversary pack which includes mainly cosmetics, but the others are sold in sets of 2 for 2,000 of the in-game paid currency. If you want all the dungeons, the ones sold in "dungeon keys" are the most expensive and I recommend only getting them after having played the other dungeons, since it is possible you might not like them at all.
By "Anything interesting" you mean raids, GMs, and Dual Destiny? 3 types of activities?
Also higher difficulties of other activities, nightfalls, seasonal stuff, dares of eternity etc. Anything that isn't totally trivial, basically. Some of that isn't even hard but still requires a group. It's a good game with friends but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone solo.
You don't really need friends. For Nightfalls, Dares, and expert seasonal stuff, LFG randoms work totally fine.
It is when you begin to venture into the non-matchmaking playlists that teams are required such as raids, legend+ content.
Lost sectors give us solo players that freedom to experience harder difficulties but include those spicy rewards that you could see with the challenges it brings.
As a team player I do not like how the casual stuff is geared for solo content but that's just me because I love playing with others more :)
that's cool, I don't mind playing coop cuz it's fun playing with others too but I would've really liked it if the game gave me an option to turn off matchmaking for some modes.
for example vanguard ops feels too easy and I would've really loved to play that mode at my own pace and try different set ups but the game doesn't give me the option to turn it off so i'm forced to queue up with others.
it's fine though no big deal, but it's always nice to have different options to play how you want rather than the game forcing one thing or another.
