You need to have The Final Shape DLC. Most of the subclass is unlocked just by playing the story, but some of it is unlocked by sub-missions and looting specific chests.

No Subclasses are free, you need to purchase the DLC's associated with those subclasses. The base subclasses, light, void and arc are the only free ones, but even then you need the forsaken pass to get the forsaken ones.

Unlike other subclasses which unlocks after beating the respective campaign, the prismatic subclass unlocks after beating the first mission which is free.

However if you don't own the DLC, you're pretty much limited in terms of subclass customization. Unlocking all abilities and stuff requires you to do missions that only unlocks after beating the final shape campaign.

They made Beyond Light campaign free to play about a year ago. You can play the whole campaign and unlock stasis without owning the DLC (or "Pack" as they call it now).

Only thing you're missing without owning the "Pack" are all the exotics (Weapons, Armors Exotic Quests) and the raid that comes with the "Pack".

Does your friend already finished the Beyond Light campaign on their current characters?, once you finished the campaign, you can't replay the whole campaign.

Only Campaigns from The Witch Queen and above can be replayed.

Prismatic costs money but can be tested out in the first mission for free.
Unlike other expansions you get it after the first mission when you buy the expansion but need to finish the game to be able to customize it.
Strand required you to finish the game but you get to use it during the campaign.
Stasis i think is now free for everyone.
