I've only seen 1 so far you NEEDED Strand to get, but they're basically just a triumph only completionists care about. Nice reputation gains I guess if you're grabbing them as you see them instead of making a day out of grabbing them all. As far as I know there are no quests or exotics tied to them.

They also grant 25 Strand meditations per collected piece, so it's good for helping unlock your Strand abilities.
