Sounds like the game sucks, right? No, what sucks is the gameplay is so incredibly satisfying and fun that you'll keep coming back. The unique weapon and gear mods can make some fun builds start to happen, and the gunplay is close to perfect. I hate it.
The base game is free. You get two campaigns, three RAIDs, a dungeon, strike playlist, PvP, Gambit, all of the seasonal events are free. Right now, Right of the Nine is free, in the upcoming expansions, the seasonal content will be free. You can get to max Light on a free to play account. Heck of a demo. Expansions are not free, they are also not the base game.
I am not qualified to say one way or the other, I am not you and don't know your likes and dislikes. The game has two free campaigns and a lot of other free to play things. Why not install it and see if you like it, you may or may not.
Keep in mind, it is a looter shooter, by definition it will have some grinding if you want certain items with particular rolls.
You are the best one to determine if this game is worth playing, give it a shot and see.
Longer answer. It gets boring and has steadily just gone downhill over all. When you've played for a long time (I have 3k+ hours on just PC), the "new" content isn't new. It is the same cookie cutter content with a new paint job. And they want you to keep paying premium price every year.
Depending on when your friends tried it is also pretty important. Release and year 1 was basically hot garbage. Since then it has just been a roller coaster. One year is good, next is bad. The big story that was 10 years in the making also ended about a year ago, and a lot of people stopped playing, including me. I've been waiting for there to be something to really get me back in but I don't see it.
If you enjoy PvP, well, their track record isn't great. They spent years destroying PvP, and I doubt it has improved much while I've been gone. It might be okay casually, but as you get better and placed in higher ELO it is just not fun, unless you enjoy constantly having to sweat even in the casual playlists, never mind dealing with terrible connections between players (this issue is made worse by the smaller PvP population). The population isn't there to provide a healthy PvP scene.
Raids and Dungeons are usually pretty solid content. The rest of PvE is kinda whatever.
Seasonal events rarely, if at all, change each year.
Lastly, Destiny is something better with friends really. If you just get on and play solo, or always with randoms, it is probably going to be a lot more boring. Unless that is really your thing.
Edit: MTX are also out of hand. Not required but if that kinda stuff upsets you then prepare to be unhappy. Eververse (premium shop) always has seemed to be the priority. Never failed to be kept working with plenty of new content when other things are broken lol.
It is free...sure, you get a better experience with the DLCs but you can still play the game without them. When I first started playing a year ago, I played the base game for several weeks before deciding I liked it enough to buy the various DLCs. I know of people who havn't bought the DLCs and still enjoy playing it
Cool, so I still have a good 17 years to play. :)
