As of right now there are no "levels" in the game so to speak.
Everything is measured by your light level which is a big number you see when you open your inventory
Everyone gets access to the free track and free track rewards.
So everyone's progress is shown next to their names. Doesn't matter if you paid for it or not.
Your friend probably did some bounties or completed some challenges, so his level is higher.
Yours will rise too eventually as you complete quests, do bounties, completed challenges. Anything that gives you XP basically.
You can see the season pass tab on the right when you open the map.
I think its available to everyone by default.

- paid season pass exp boost (20%) (optional)
