If you spent 10 bucks on Season Pass you may have some okay experience.
Without DLC you will leave hanging for the sotry and phased out of a lot of meta weapons that are important. Also no raids

to be fair the story is confusing even with dlc lol

I have a friend who recently started playing ftp, he enjoys it so far, but I think it's because he doesn't know what he doesn't have.

Yeah i get that and thats like me... If i get a solid 20 hours or so of enjoyment without having to spend a cent i'll be pretty happy with that...

NO it isn't. I am a solo player (not for much longer) I have almost 8500 hours since release with 2 accounts (this is my second) and this is the last money I am spending on this game. It is sad because at release this was the best experience I had EVER had in this type of game.. period! I highly advise against it now unless you just want to kill time without spending money. Over half the content WE paid for is vaulted (gone) and no longer playable. Up to you but I wouldn't if I was new. Hope this helps

well it more like a "try before you buy" than entirely "Free to play"
you can access to all of the core activities in this game such as
- Strikes (3 players pve missions) and free nightfalls (Non dlc strikes)
- Gambit (PvpPve)
- Crucible (PvP)

as a free to play
- Some free event like Guardian games,Iron Banner etc.
- 1 free dungeons (end game)
- Ritual weapons (Salvager's Salvo)
- Seasonal exotic weapon
- Some old exotic weapons that you can farm the material and collect at the tower
- Access to all destinations and it public event, lost sectors
- Free triumph (if you are a completionist)
- Seasonal artifact (so you can mod and build up your character)
and you can grind out and get access to some free tier seasonal weapon and armors
or if you enjoy fashion stuff you can grind some bounties to collect bright dust and buy something from the store

all of the 3 core activities have matchmaking so you don't have to worry about finding people to join you

what you will be missing out if you don't have dlcs or season pass
- Story content (missions and some lore)
- New subclass (Forsaken dlc/Beyond Light dlc)
- Raids (Last Wish,Garden of Salvation,Deep Stone Crypt) along with it gears
- DLCs armor, weapon and exotics
- DLCs dungeon (The Shattered Throne,Pit of heresy)
- seasonal activities (Wrathborn hunts and Battlegrounds currently)
- seasonal Armors and some gameplay boost
- some seasonal story

raids and dungeons you will have to find some people by yourself cause it has no matchmaking

so if you're not into end game content you prob not missing out much since you get access to all core activities anyway and it's solo friendly

I suggest you try the f2p option out first
see if you like the game or not
try out it gunplay, switch class and see if something "clicks" you
It take me 3 uninstall before it actually clicks me and it was the raids that make me love this game and still sticking with it til this day

most of the vault content will be update and return in the future
so for now you can't access it
for me personally I don't really miss it that much tbh

also if you needed help with anything in this game feel free to add me
I can tag along and help out with most of the thing
(if you wanted to try out the end game dungeon and such)

hope this help out!

if you're just beggining like me, then it doesn't make any sense. they've given up on introducing new players to the world and its story
