A lot of in game unlocks are for the opportunity to buy merch. It's like Meat space transmog.

It's just a sort of novel way to monetize the IP so they can keep the lights on and keep making content.

The items on the bungie store are physical items, of course they are not free. No merch in ANY game is free at all.
