This area is the fast travel tutorial
Just fast travel on the Map to get out of there
Nominally, your Ghost finds you and resurrects you along an access road outside of The Cosmodrome. He then instructs you to move inside the wall structure surrounding the ruins (and finds you some basic equipment along the way).
Eventually, you find your way into a section where there's a Fallen Walker (which you're supposed to fight. Following that, you're supposed to head into another set of tunnels beyond it.
In the version I played, Ghost leads you to an old, abandoned/derelict Arcadia class Jumpship. (And when asked by you (the Guardian) whether it's salvageable, Ghost turns to you and says with blithe confidence: "I can make it work". (which, is one of my favorite two lines that Ghost says)), you're then sent to The Tower, where you're supposed to meet Zevala and the various other members of the Vanguard.
I believe that the current version takes you to Shaw Han (a Vanguard operative) who gives you some basic quests (bounties) to teach you how the basics of the game works, following which he'll send you on to The Tower.
But as I say, I haven't played through any of that section in years, and I know it's been redesigned a bit since I went through.
But Destiny 2 has a really bad habit of just going: "Shrugs shoulders" Eh, you'll figure it out.
Except, the game literally tells you to open the map and fast travel to the Stepps.
It literally DID for me.
Brand new players, learning is what you're doing in New Light, it's where you figure out things. The problem is, some people just can't be bothered, they insist on hand holding, and this game already does more hand holding than it used to. The UI is not confusing, maybe people should get used to using it and stop complaining, it's not hard.
You're both right
There was a bug introduced with Lightfall that didn't have the tutorial popup appear and thus this situation occurred
I've been playing since red war. No, the entire nuance of destiny's systems that are important for playing the game are not explained hardly at all. The UI is absolute trash. I can ( and have ) made better UI myself. There's nested menus for EVERYTHING and it's awful.
This on top of MULTIPLE bugged popups that are supposed to explain some of the mechanics, bungie just don't have good quality assurance.
Oh! That one has played since Red War whatever shall I do, YAWN, I was on BNet too. If you don't know that there was very little explaining done for new players in the Red War and that there were nasty bugs, I think maybe you didn't play on BNet.
As to nested menus, those are a good thing, it's organized, what do you want, everything all piled in one huge list together?
Dose Bungie have issues, yes they do. That said, even with your claim of making a better UI, I suspect they're still more successful than you.
