To invite a player directly to be a Bungie Friend, players will need to search for their exact Bungie Name in the Invites tab of the Roster screen or on Bungie net. Players can have a maximum of 200 Bungie Friends at a time.
Under the Settings tab of the Roster screen and from their account on Bungie net[www.bungie.net] players can manage their invite settings to determine who can interact with them and send them invite requests. Players can individually toggle their preferences for Fireteam privacy, Fireteam invites, Bungie Friend requests, and Clan invites.
When accessing Destiny 2 on Xbox consoles or the Microsoft Store on PC, invites will function differently depending on if Cross Play is currently enabled.
When Cross Play is enabled
In-game invites will function across all platforms if the target players are currently online.
When Cross Play is disabled
In-game invites specifically between Xbox consoles and Microsoft Store on PC will not function when Cross Play is disabled.

I already set him as my friend, it only allows me to remove him as a friend where he gets all options for fireteam etc. We're both on PC too, so not sure wtf.
From any text channel, players can manage their fireteam status by using the following commands:
/join [name] - Join a fireteam by a player's Bungie Name (Player must be in one of your Rosters; Friend, Game, Clan)
/invite [name] - Invite a player by their Bungie Name (Player must be in one of your Rosters; Friend, Game, Clan)
If a player is harassing you or you believe that they should be reported or blocked, use the following commands:
/block [name] - Block a player using their Bungie Name.
/report [name] - Report a player using their Bungie Name.
/unblock [name] - Unblock a player using their Bungie Name.

I'll try the text command, thanks. Inviting through Steam just returns an error.
