Exotic engrams?
Is everyone just rolling random exotics through engrams or is focusing the meta?

right now the hot stuff is Vex Incursions in Neomuna. They work on a "checklist" droprate meaning it will only give exotics you do not have. In the instance where you happen to have every exotic possible already gained atleast once the drop just becomes random.

Another (much harder option IMO) is legendary lost zones which will drop a random of their respective table. It will tell you beforehand what the slot is; helmet, legs, etc.

Most players who are endgame enough to care about armour rolls have just amassed a collection of decent and good exotic rolls by the insane quantity of exotic drops over the last 2 years, and by just keeping what seems good and adding it to your stockpile you'll end up with a decent reserve of usable and varied rolls. If you're in need of a specific piece or a high value exotic (i.e meta), especially if you need it for multiple different stat setups, focusing is the way to go, but also often only supplemental to lost sector farming given the temperamental nature of engram drops for focusing

This question was about engrams focused at the cryptarch.

I guess I asked this question poorly in this context: when exotic focusing was first released the random engram rolls were (reportedly) terrible like mid-low 50's. I wasn't sure if anyone knew if this was still the case.

You can get 60+ from focusing.
