Does this game still time gate things?
And how heavy is the time gating usually if its still there?

New content isn't super timegate-y, but you can't get everything until like week 8 usually. They give you 70% of the stuff then trickle out the last 30% so people can't get triumphs until later.

As a free to play live service game there will always be some degree of time gating as that's one of the simplest way to keep players coming back. How much it will impact any given player depends on what they're wanting from the game, for example a returning player will be able to catch up on the seasonal storylines without any of the timegating that content originally had but they'll still have to wait on rotations and play at certain times for other things.

I don't think it has the right to be called 'Free to play', more of a 'Free to try'. Without DLC's this game has little to no content

There was a time when D2 was free to play but nooooo bungo had to remove content WE PAID FOR and screw over free to play players.

One of these days you'll read an EULA for any game released since 1999: You do NOT own the game. You do NOT own any content in said game. Publisher can change and or remove any and or all content at any time for any reason. What you paid for was a license to play the game.

What is it even mean "gating"? I have 1300 hours and can't understand why every single Andy in universe complaining about it.
Gating this, gating that, in every single corner.

Time gating is a system where content is put behind a time restraint. For example you could argue Seasonal Quests are time gated as you have to wait a week before doing the next missions etc. The issue with time gating in this instance was Bungie was locking the ITL weapons behind weekly quests so in theory Moutaintop might be a quest not be released weeks after ITL started. As a filler until TFS people just want them to let people farm them all instantly. As a compromise all weapons will be available to obtain and farm by the end of April instead of end of May

I agree that the game is free to try as a majority of the content is behind a paywall, but you still get a fair amount for free. You get the new light experience, which isn't much, but it's something. You get quest to unlock light subclasses, as well as strike, crucible, and gambit main ritual playlist for free. That also includes 2 raids and a dungeon, plus the first mission of every DLC and Season to try.

A lot of the time gating has been removed, as if you own the DLC you can pretty much insta skip the hard cap upon completing the main DLC. There is speculation that with into the light coming in April a "care package" of sorts will be given to players to bring them up to the powerful cap, for free. That is 1750, 1810 is pinnacle cap. It's still about 1-4 weeks of grinding specific rewards depending on how much you play on one character or multiple.

Time gating is everywhere in this game.

Times gated story missions, time gated rewards (multiple areas), time gated PVP playlists, timegated synthweave, etc.

It's usually only week to week but some instances such as Iron Banner or nightfall loot is longer.

Honestly synthweave being timegated is the most sinister one IMO as they limit you to 10 per season (2 x 10 this season because ITL has been delayed ( 2x10 because if you missed the first 10 you can only get 10 now.) ). The limit is artificial and they let you buy more for ludicrious irl cost.

No speculation, on April 9th all players get to skip to 1800, the current powerful cap. There's some screenshots from the streams of gear at 1830 LL however, so the exact numbers may be slightly off.

Well then that answers it, there isn't a time gate anymore, apart from rotation. It was already confirmed that there will not be a Light Level raise with into the light, it was just a dev build.
