I need to know if it’s better to learn how to make my builds my way or just copy a build from popular destiny 2 players on YouTube

Do both, learning about popular builds will start to show you what goes into making your own and you'll learn a lot good tips in the process.

It depends if you enjoy the idea of messing around with all the buff/perk/ability interactions and seeing what does and doesn't work. I personally prefer to snag a general build online, then tweaking it to my play style, I have a friend that completely goes in blind and figures it out themselves to see what works.

In my opinion, the former allows you to have a foundation of what you want while having the ability to still tailor it and the latter allows you to really get to know all the systems involved and maybe even figuring out a very niche build that others would call you insane for. Happens plenty of times. Then again, this is all just my opinion.

Like every game ever,
1. Learn what the meta is
2. Understand why it is the meta
3. Reconstruct the meta from scratch from your own understanding
4. Compare to other player's understandings and applications of the meta, are they better? Are they worse? Why?
This will allow you to understand and deduce metas for yourself, even as the game continues to change

It's often smart to start with the inspiration of their build concepts then tailor it to fit YOUR play style. I also find understanding a few core goals before you start is a good idea: do you want the build to be heavy on grenades? You should plan for fragments that improve or enhance grenade functionality, etc.

Also don't go to Shiro Chi or Alters to test your build out, that ♥♥♥♥ is way mega easy and makes every build look hyper effective. Go to Neomuna where the roaming mobs are over your level for a more realistic experience of how your build will work in end-game content. ALSO not every build needs to be for end game content! In the same way a great add-clearing gun won't be a great boss DPS gun, a build for mid-level content doesn't need to be great (and probably isn't) for grand master nightfalls.

It entierly depends on what you want to do.

Do you want to have fun? Then build however you want. Make it your own and play however you wish! If you start having problems, switch stuff up and see what you can do on your own (or with a fireteam).

Do you just want to run high level/end game content and nothing else? Then you better get prepared to be a meta slave where it's no fun allowed, because unless you're solo or with friends, prepared to be kicked from activities or be forced to solo when players leave because people suck and will just bail the second they see something in your loadout or build they don't like.

I always say do what makes you happy, play your style your way. But be prepared for toxic community backlash in game if you don't meet their standards.
Yay I think some of my builds are the reason I sometimes get kicked from a fireteam finder area when they look at my builds

So like is it better to just copy a build from someone and if so should I use mobalytics or a build from YouTube

So lookup what the exotic armor piece does and then figure out how to make a build with that exotic piece
