The DLC has only just dropped and seasons not started yet. You may get better stat gear as you progress throughout the year also transmog is a thing in the game
So the infusion process
Select the lower Light Level gear you WANT to use (lock it, just in case)
Now, make sure you have upgrade modules in your inventory (many places to grab these)
Then in the screen where you can modify the perks/weapon/armor mods, there will be a slot on the left that kinda looks like an arrow, hover over that and you'll see all the weapons/armor in that slot, and anything that is available to be infused will not be greyed out. Also if the gear is the same thing (say Errant Knight 1.0 boots being infused to Errant Knight 1.0 boots) the cost is only 10k glimmer instead of an upgrade module
Once you find you're right setup yea thats pretty much it then you are basically just feeding higher GS items to that. In terms of appearance you change it as long its not legendary via their "transmog" system while also still using UNLOCKED shaders instead of 1 time use (thank god).
MODS CLOSE THIS THREAD
You can transmog any piece of legendary level (purple background) gear to look however you want.
