you can unlock the subclasses but not lvl them up outside the pale heart. so after the 1st mission in which you unlock prism, you wont be able to progress further till you buy the expansion. im still lvling up anyways so its not like the game is unplayable. i even played the new strikes in vanguard ops. so its not exclusive.
