Long as the loot is good and the gameplay top notch, a lot of people will always be around.
I got in playing in Forsaken, and have seen nothing but decline since Shadowkeep. The politics in Bungie, microtransactions, constant splitting of content into sub-purchases like Dungeon keys. Quality has been declining severely, but monetization has been ramping up. Not to mention a lot of content has been feeling like it was just recycled mechanics with a minor change.... We are getting Less but paying More as a whole lately.
It's even driven me back into playing more Warframe lately, just because I find it to be a more balanced game, where I can have more control over how I play it.
My friend group for it disbands, I stopped playing as much, then D2 came out and I skipped the early days (thankfully) and came back for Witch Queen.
Witch Queen was phenomenal and I joined later on in the year, for Season of Plunder. I loved every minute of it.
Then Lightfall launched and it was absolute dog-water in comparison to WQ, we'd traded the tone and ambience / feel of Destiny 1 with WQ, to Marvel quips and training montages where you get all tired and sleepy in Lightfall. The disconnect between the two, from writing, tone, atmosphere, feel was nuts and Nimbus absolutely sucks as a character.
The expansion was that bad, I ended up quitting again.
Final Shape ends up being bad? I'll quit again. Easy to remove myself from something where, even if the gameplay / gunplay is good, Sunken Cost Fallacy doesn't kick in like it probably does for a lot in this community.
No, it is not. Despite what you might thing. It has a free to play entry, which a lot of people do to go and try the game (and A LOT of them will quit after being flooded by all the "Buy access to this now").
The free to play entry, counting as a purchase, will then also attract all the bots (and trust me, there are a lot of them for Crucible and the like). So those numbers are unreliable, especially since a lot of people came in recently for the extra free content that was on offer to everyone.
Final Shape is hyped up and a lot of people are buying it, sure, but comparing it to something like Final Fantasy isn't fair. FF Franchise doesn't constantly make one bad decision that divides the player base, after another. FF Franchise doesn't elicit a "They did what with MTX again?".
So I'll restate this again. Final Shape is going to stabilize or break D2, and no amount of fan-boying is going to change what has been an ongoing, growing, dis-taste for what Bungie has been doing as a company.
Problem now is, we dont know whats coming next year. This could well be a jumping off point for a lot of players, specially when there are so many other games vying for our time.
The combat loop in this game IS fantastic, but if you lack a regular fireteam you miss out on the best content.
Much more player friendly devs and just as good content, also a better power fantasy since they don't nerf things with poor excuses.
Cross-progression yet?
If so, I'd love to pull my PSN profile over as I put a lot of time into it.
Yes actually!
They started out in waves earlier this year for specific players to make sure everything was working.
I haven't kept up to date on it, but you should be able to now (there's probably a guide on there official website for it).
