Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken were removed a long while ago.
So, at least you will have something to play before deciding on whether you want to sink some money into the game for the rest of the content. However, things will likely be confusing to follow with the story.
I wouldn't call it the butt end, it's the end of the Light Vs Dark thing, not the end of the game.
The above response is not entirely accurate.
Red War and Curse of Osirus are very forgettable, Warmind was OK but nothing great.
Forsaken expansion was not removed, the Campagne and the Tangled Shore map were removed, the things that made it great are still in game.
I'm pretty sure I read that the Campagnes for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light are the ones that will be free to play.
Yesterday, you could have picked up everything that was available to that point (including the dungeon key for Lightfall) for $40.00, watch that escalate with the price of the new legacy collection.
The lead up, then that end, love it.
The original Destiny 2 campaigns are all locked away, and although they are only minimally relevant to current events....its still a huge chunk of the game (which I enjoyed more than the more recent stuff) that has been locked away.
Is the game still worth playing for the gunplay and MMO elements, absolutely, but I wouldnt get into it for the story at this point.
There has always been the problem that PC players have never gotten the "full story", as Destiny 1 never made it to PC.
If you're someone who doesn't care so much about the story and just wants to kill stuff - absolutely. There's a huge backlog of stuff to do and you will absolutely be able to sink hours into what's on offer.
It's my personal opinion that the stuff playable in the game today is far superior to the content that was removed with regards to balancing and moment-to-moment gameplay. Destiny 2 in its release year might as well be a completely different game to Destiny 2 today, so much has changed.
If you want to buy right now and only want the DLCs that add the new gameplay mechanics and so on then I recommend picking up Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, and Final Shape. All of these DLCs add some major or minor gameplay mechanics where Shadowkeep does not.
Forsaken Pack adds a bunch of weapons and some other content and Bungie 30th Anniversary adds some content too. If you're a Halo fan I would recommend getting 30th Anniversary as you can get a certain pistol weapon that I am sure you will be familiar with.
I wish I could have the experience of playing this game for the first time again.
you can jump in at anytime and starting grinding for fun and unique guns, even if you spend a minimal amount, the season pass and all the little MTX's are just for the 2000 hour players and they dont matter to your enjoyment
In the end though, if you just want an MMO-lite game that has decent gunplay, this is a decent game to give a shot, especially because the entrance fee is free.
I'm gonna keep it real with you, trying to get into Destiny 2 is like trying to get on a train that has already left the station a long time ago, Trying to get in with no investment is brutal but once you get onto the train, it is very hard to fall off. If you're willing to play catch up and go through what story is present, then go for it. If you're not interested in a new time sink, then please save yourself the headaches and move on.
