looking for a new game to sink hours into. although looking at how old destiny 2 is would it really be worth the hours to start NOW, practically at the butt end?

The devs have removed a lot of content over the years, and I don't mean the very throwaway seasonal stories. At present: Only Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and Lightfall are present in the game. The first two in that list are set to be made free to play once the Final Shape expansion releases but only their campaigns. Additional stuff like Raids and Dungeons are a different story though.

Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken were removed a long while ago.

So, at least you will have something to play before deciding on whether you want to sink some money into the game for the rest of the content. However, things will likely be confusing to follow with the story.

I wouldn't call it the butt end, it's the end of the Light Vs Dark thing, not the end of the game.

The above response is not entirely accurate.
Red War and Curse of Osirus are very forgettable, Warmind was OK but nothing great.

Forsaken expansion was not removed, the Campagne and the Tangled Shore map were removed, the things that made it great are still in game.

I'm pretty sure I read that the Campagnes for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light are the ones that will be free to play.

Yesterday, you could have picked up everything that was available to that point (including the dungeon key for Lightfall) for $40.00, watch that escalate with the price of the new legacy collection.

This game is their cash cow, they are never shutting it down until there are like 500 people playing it. You literally have more content and things to do than you will ever have time for. Does that mean its worth your time? No. You should excercise 1 hour a day, you should meal prep all your meals, you should focus on investing your money and saving for retirement, you should build meaningful relationships with people you know in real life, you should volunteer at a charity, homeless shelter, religious org or join a crypto bro club. Anything is worth your time if its not playing Destiny. You should never, ever play this game, its the most insane grind for so little reward. Also join my destiny clan discord.gg/rKrZWyen

The lead up, then that end, love it. :nisha:

I love Destiny 2, but I am going to be honest. Its probably too late if you are here for the compete story.

The original Destiny 2 campaigns are all locked away, and although they are only minimally relevant to current events....its still a huge chunk of the game (which I enjoyed more than the more recent stuff) that has been locked away.

Is the game still worth playing for the gunplay and MMO elements, absolutely, but I wouldnt get into it for the story at this point.

If you are someone who cares about completely understanding the plot of the game in a "Wookiepedia" way, then while it's not too late, you will need to spend a fair amount of time outside of the game understanding the major events. For reference, this Youtube video by a Destiny lore youtuber which claims to cover the entire story is over 10 hours long and while it's good, its length has become something of a running joke in the community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzBmOeYmN_M

There has always been the problem that PC players have never gotten the "full story", as Destiny 1 never made it to PC.

If you're someone who doesn't care so much about the story and just wants to kill stuff - absolutely. There's a huge backlog of stuff to do and you will absolutely be able to sink hours into what's on offer.

It's my personal opinion that the stuff playable in the game today is far superior to the content that was removed with regards to balancing and moment-to-moment gameplay. Destiny 2 in its release year might as well be a completely different game to Destiny 2 today, so much has changed.

If you want to buy right now and only want the DLCs that add the new gameplay mechanics and so on then I recommend picking up Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, Lightfall, and Final Shape. All of these DLCs add some major or minor gameplay mechanics where Shadowkeep does not.

Forsaken Pack adds a bunch of weapons and some other content and Bungie 30th Anniversary adds some content too. If you're a Halo fan I would recommend getting 30th Anniversary as you can get a certain pistol weapon that I am sure you will be familiar with.

I wish I could have the experience of playing this game for the first time again.

It depends on what you realistically want to accomplish but to answer your question more directly, no it's not too late to join the D2 community. Avoid the 'get gud' crowds and you should be fine.

d2 is not about the story, dont bother trying to piece together all the campaigns because they all tell a different story, d2 is always relevant for new players because what d2 excels at is the gameplay and the loot grind

you can jump in at anytime and starting grinding for fun and unique guns, even if you spend a minimal amount, the season pass and all the little MTX's are just for the 2000 hour players and they dont matter to your enjoyment

this isn't the butt end, just stay away from the game

Lots of content. IF you want to go through the whole story. Its to late for that. First 3 expansions are archived. However if you just want to have fun and play to the top level you can jump in at any time. Nothing stopping you from getting as far as anyone else.

Honestly its probably the best time to get into it. With them wrapping up the light and dark saga, you will be front and center for the new story line they aim to release. If you feel you are going to be confused, their are plenty of great videos to watch now while we are on downtime, I see a few people have posted some I would recommend. Mynameisbyf probably has some of the best lore vids out their, I've have watched plenty to catch up or understand things better. In game has an 'ok' timeline with specific missions from the older removed content you can replay to get a better understanding of things if you plan on playing The Final Shape.

In the end though, if you just want an MMO-lite game that has decent gunplay, this is a decent game to give a shot, especially because the entrance fee is free.

Over 2k hours here. Dropped it recently since wasn't really happy where the game is going. FInal Shape might fix it, who knows. So honestly try it but don't buy anything yet. You can easily clock in quite a few hours in FTP stuff and then decide if you like it or not. Gunplay feels awesome, people still playing the game.

I'm gonna keep it real with you, trying to get into Destiny 2 is like trying to get on a train that has already left the station a long time ago, Trying to get in with no investment is brutal but once you get onto the train, it is very hard to fall off. If you're willing to play catch up and go through what story is present, then go for it. If you're not interested in a new time sink, then please save yourself the headaches and move on.

Just get the game, that FOMO going to hit you so hard tmw when everyone is on and showing off that prismatic super and new weps. I personally can't wait to team up with some fresh blue berries and show off all the exotics I have earned these past few months.
