new player needing buyers advice

hi just recently started playing and i see that there are a few 80% off on steam.. i was wondering if i should buy the Destiny 2: Legacy Collection? or do you guys have another recommendation as to what to buy first

Destiny 2 Legacy 80% off is quite a good deal. It will give you Witch Queen (best current story in the game), Beyond Light (new subclass which is getting buffed) and Shadowkeep, which is not as good as recent DLC's though is where Bungie wants new players to start in the Light and Dark saga. Lightfall Annual Pass (every season this year) is on sale for $29 compared to base Lightfall's $46, if you want the newest Darkness Subclass then buying it on sale is a fantastic idea, especially with how strong Strand is. Keep in mind however, you will not get to play the seasons as tomorrow they will be removed from the game. If you don't really want to do older content, and want to jump in with everyone else, then The Final Shape is your best bet.

so if i didnt buy the legacy and just went directly in to the new upcoming expac i would not be able to unlock the subclass etc. etc. that the older expac has?

That is correct, Stasis is tied to Beyond light and Strand to Lightfall. The Final Shape kind of has a new subclass, which is like a mix of all the other ones into a sort of new one (Prismatic).

If I was starting out I would get latest expansion and ignore the rest for now. You will be plenty busy with The Final Shape and stasis subclass will be free for every one once The Final Shape launches. As for strand subclass it's up to you if you want Lightfall right now or get it with next sale potentialy integrated into Destiny 2: Legacy Collection.
