This game is a complete mess
I just started playing this game, and I'm not sure if my game is completely bugged or if it's supposed to be this way.

The issue:
Yesterday I was playing in the "tutorial area" doing some missions and learning about the game in the Cosmodrome area.
Then I quit the game and started it again today, and I'm introduced to a new cinematic, and then my character is in a totally different area in space, on a ship. WTF?
I have no idea what is going on, why I'm here, who is talking to me, or why they seem to know me, or what I'm supposed to do. OK, i guess i just play along, even tho i would rather continue what I was doing in the Cosmodrome.

So i play a couple of hours and then quit.

I start the game again, and I'm introduced to a new cinematic again, and I'm now for a second time in a NEW totally different planet again, and the game wants me to start some other quests or something. So, the same confusing and disjointed experience like last time I booted up the game. WTF?

Why won't the game just let me focus on what I want to do, without ruining the focus and continuity of what I'm currently playing?

These experiences have totally ruined my enjoyment of the game and makes me not want to continue, because this game feels like a disjointed mess that doesn't respect what I'm currently playing or seems to care about narrative continuity or to explain what's going on.

Is it supposed to be like this?

Story was fine, then bungie said game is to big and cut 80% of the story you paid for to "save space".

Pretty moronic when you know game will be 155 GB after new exp.

File compression doesn't exist for Bungie apparently even though other companies manage it just fine.

I'm also a very new player and I also have had a very messy new player experience. just get past it and learn how to navigate the menus, locations, and quests. once you get that down, the game is very fun.

I noticed this also and it's bonkers. How on earth did this even pass quality control, who knows. Anyway, the reason is because so much content has been vaulted over the years that it's impossible to tell a cohesive story, so they just fudge it.

playing Destiny as a new player in a cohesive manner is akin to being told how to order, when to eat and how to eat each dish at a fancy restaurant, when the food is garbage anyway; it makes no sense and at the end of the day is a waste of time, just turn brain off and go adds go brrr

This stuff of starting missions on log-in, was started because people would flood the forums with "how do I start the seasonal story" because they couldn't follow basic prompts that say "hey! welcome to the new season! to start, please go here" (they would just press "continue" through the prompts that open up at the start of each weekly rotation)

So to fix it, Bungie just said "fine, we'll throw you into the first mission of the current season/event and there ya go, get your artifact and have fun"

And apparently now that confuses people as well soooooo

Nobody wins

if you played the first game you would know lol

The layout of the game is a bit confusing at first but once you understand it is actually really good.

You always start in a ship. The main hub is your view of the galaxy. You get to choose what missions or campaign to follow from the quest menu. Each planet will have a map with multiple locations that you can fast travel to as well.

To get started just make sure you select the mission you want to do and go to it. You can switch between different campaigns and progress will be saved on a checkpoint or mission start.

I don't understand how this game has the highest numbers for MMO on steam. It's astonishing given how low quality the new player experience is, confusing systems etc. I played a few years ago and it was a mess then, still a mess now according to OP.

How on earth does it manage to stay at the top? Someone please explain

Oh yeah im having the same thing happen. I start the game am on earth in cosmodrome, then the game takes me to some tower in a spaceport to talk to a wizardlady, then tells me to go back. I log off. Then im on neptune figthing agaisnt some guy with smoke for a head. He does magic to the giant space ball then im suddenly in night city but its on neptune and there are giants. I finish that and then return to earth to finish the Tutorial. That again leads me to the same spaceport place. And now i login on next day and im not trying to help some mages cast the wish spell and im in some table with barrier on the door so i cant progress.

What even is happening how did i go from trying to get my hands on a ship assisting giants on neptune to going back to earth to get a ship to now helping some wizards cast a high level spell. Who the ♥♥♥♥ is everyone, where is everyone, what is the meaning of life.

It is what you make of it. You are playing the game, don't let the game play you.

Especially if you havent log on for a while the mission playlist must have changed to the current season or a different campaign. You just need to switch to the one you was doing.

For me this game is basically a Halo 3 MMO, the gunplay and campaigns are satisfying and epic. Dungeons and raids can be repeatable and fun way to get upgrades. There's a lot too do and almost everything can be done with friends.

yep, its shockingly, embarrassingly, shamefully bad in its UI design and how it presents itself.

yeaaaahhh they do that. i wish they kept a legacy campaign section for new players to go through after the new light if they wanted get rid of old content or cycle worlds then just introduce cutscenes as they touch the seasonal tables but here we are.
